A Brief Overview
As the Nursing Professional Development Specialist, your main responsibilities (NPDS) is a registered nurse who enhances professional competence and fosters growth among learners across diverse settings. In an interprofessional environment, the NPDS facilitates continuous development for the healthcare team. Responsibilities include adhering to the Standards of NPD Practice and Professional Performance, which outline expected professional performance levels. The NPDS leverages specialized tools, theories, skills, and knowledge to enhance learners' healthcare practices and advance the NPD specialty. Additionally, the NPDS assumes various roles, including learning facilitator, change agent, mentor, leader, champion for scientific inquiry, and advocate for the NPD specialty. By ensuring nursing staff's clinical competence and promoting evidence-based practice, the NPDS contributes to quality patient care.
What you will do
Learning Facilitator: Utilizes the educational design process to address knowledge, skills, and practice gaps identified through needs assessments.
Change Agent: Drives process transformation at various levels (macro, meso, and micro) by inspiring change, taking initiative, and implementing project management and improvement processes.
Mentor: Contributes to professional development by supporting lifelong learning and helping individuals grow across practice, professional, and educational contexts.
Leader: Influences interprofessional practice and learning environments, the nursing professional development (NPD) specialty, the nursing profession, and healthcare.
Champion for Scientific Inquiry: Advocates for generating and disseminating new knowledge, using evidence to enhance NPD practice, guide clinical decisions, and improve patient care.
Advocate for NPD Specialty: Actively promotes and demonstrates nursing professional development as a specialized nursing practice area. Feel free to ask if you need further clarification or assistance
Onboarding/Orientation: Designing, coordinating, managing, facilitating, conducting, and evaluating clinical onboarding/orientation programs for nursing and other healthcare personnel.
Competency Management: Assessing, measuring, documenting, and supporting staff members' competency while addressing any competence deficiencies.
Education: Creating, managing, implementing, coordinating, and evaluating continuing educational activities tailored to address practice gaps for specific target audiences, aiming to enhance knowledge, skills, and practice outcomes.
Professional Role Development: Identifying and implementing strategies to support continuous maturation through lifelong learning, enabling role transition, integration, skill acquisition, and succession planning.
Research/Evidence-Based Practice/Quality Improvement: Promoting and integrating the science of the NPD specialty to drive ongoing practice improvement. The NPDS encourages research, evidence-based practice, and quality improvement initiatives within patient care settings, including disseminating findings.
Learning: Supports the acquisition of knowledge, skills, abilities, and attitudes that form the foundation for evidence-based practice.
Change: Facilitates the adoption of new behaviors and processes in clinical practice.
Professional Role Competence and Growth: Ensures performance aligns with defined criteria based on specialty areas, context, and the model of practice, including progression through Benner's stages of clinical development.
