Summary

To provide professional nursing leadership and administrative direction for nursing practice for Registered Nurses, Endoscopy Technicians and Phys Lab Technicians as well as Licensed Practical Nurses and Ancillary personnel. To participate as a member of an Ambulatory Care Unit?s leadership team to provide and continually improve health care services and to support the mission and goals of the Health System. To ensure the quality of nursing services provided to patients. To assist the Clinical Nursing Director and Associate Chief Nursing Officer and Associate Chief Operating Officer for UMMG in planning and management of the patient care services. To partner with the local Medical Directors in the operations of the local units. The ideal candidate will be firm yet personable, a strong leader with the ability to set high standards and hold people accountable for meeting unit performance and patient care standards. They will have process improvement background and demonstrated ability as a change agent.

Responsibilities*

Personnel Management
  • Select, hire and plan for staffing, consistent with service needs and budget
  • Schedule and assign clinical staff, arrange coverage as needed
  • Supervise, mentor, counsel, coach, and evaluate staff as part of a continuous development program within the Professional Framework
  • Participate in the development, implementation, and revision of individual performance plans
  • Support staff education, cross training and proficiency development
  • Develop and foster team work and building trusting relationships
  • Facilitate open channels of communication with Director, Managers, peers, staff, and physicians.

Clinical Practice
  • Facilitate and support a nursing practice environment in which empowerment, responsibility, autonomy, accountability, collaboration and peer review are exercised
  • Coordinate quality assurance activities
  • Participate in the development of patient care models and systems
  • Serve as a role model to other departmental staff in the provision of direct patient care
  • Participate in multidisciplinary and unit problem-solving regarding patient care

Clinical Operations
  • Participate in the development and implementation of unit goals and objectives.
  • Manages, directly and in collaboration with others, staffing, scheduling, benchmarking, work redesign and cost-management strategies in the planning and management of clinical operations.
  • Provides input into nursing payroll budget, and monitors and problem solves with Administrators and Medical Directors regarding variances.
  • Organizes and facilitates unit based educational activities and inservices.
  • Assures compliance with regulatory programs' standards related to the nursing. Provides leadership, assists and advises Administrators, Medical Directors, and Senior Nursing Leadership in satisfying other regulatory standards.
  • Interprets and implements University and Health System policies and procedures.
  • Assists in the planning and implementation of new or expanded services and programs.
  • Provides interface and liaison communications regarding programs external to the unit which have implications for nursing staff.
  • Represents nursing, Ambulatory Care Services and/or the clinical department(s) or unit(s) on assigned committees.
Quality Assurance and Research
  • Participates in and conducts the analysis of data.
  • Assists in the development of strategies to improve care management within the area or unit.
  • Participates in and supports the involvement of nursing staff in unit quality improvement activities.
  • Provides leadership to staff in understanding and applying quality improvement principles and adoption of evidence-based changes in practice into daily work.
  • Promotes the integration of research findings into clinical practice.
  • Supports research activities on the unit, as indicated.

Professional Development Education
  • Facilitate collective activity in professional organizations.
  • Contribute professional clinical and management expertise to other health professionals, both formally and informally.
  • Participate in professional organizations.
  • Develops self professionally through continuing education, professional reading, participation in professional organizations and networking. Evaluates own performance periodically with the Clinical Nursing Director and Associate Chief Nursing Officer and Associate Chief Operating Officer for UMMG.

Required Qualifications*

  • Required Educational Requirements:
  • Applicant must meet one of the following
    • Bachelors of Science in Nursing OR
    • Associates degree or diploma in Nursing and a Master's degree in Nursing
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan.
  • Minimum five (5) years RN experience
  • Minimum two (2) years of recent (within the last 5 years) RN experience in procedural sedation and/or Endoscopy.
  • Completion of a Nurse Leadership certification within one (1) year of accepting this position or when eligible to certify, whichever comes first. Certification is expected to be maintained while in this leadership role. Examples include Certified Nurse Manager and Leader (CNML) or, Nurse Executive (NE-BC). Certifications must be recognized by the Magnet Recognition ProgramĀ® and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC.) See full list here .
  • Supervisory/management experience strongly preferred.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Supervisory/management experience with responsibilities for staff development
  • Advanced computer skills desired, including proficiency in MiChart, Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and educational research systems.
  • Experience with new program development
  • Ambulatory Care experience
  • Excellent customer service, communication, team building, and problem-solving skills. Ability to work with multiple disciplines.
  • Current ACLS


Work Schedule

Hours: 40 hours/week
Shift: Days; hours will flex to department need
