Job Summary

7 EAST MOTT is a 32-bed acute pediatric hematology, oncology, and bone marrow transplant unit. Patients range in age from newborn to young adulthood. Patient diagnoses include sickle cell anemia, leukemia, lymphoma, and solid tumors.

Responsibilities*

To assist the Clinical Nursing Director in planning and management of 7 East and in the provision of patient care.
  • To provide leadership in the practice of nursing, emphasizing quality patient care, education, and research.
  • To assist in coordinating between management and patient care activities consistent with the University of Michigan Hospital and Health Center mission and goal statements.
  • Reports directly to the Clinical Nursing Director. Collaborative/consultative relationship with other health professionals and administrative personnel.
  • Administrative and functional supervision is exercised over nursing and support staff as delegated by Clinical Nursing Director.

Responsibilities include:

Personnel Management:
  • Plan, assign and supervise the work of nursing and support staff.
  • Participate in interviewing, selecting and orienting nursing and support staff.
  • Participate in the counseling, coaching, discipline, and evaluation of unit staff.
  • Participate in the development, implementation and revision of individual performance plans.
  • Facilitate open channels of communication with managers, peers, staff, and physicians.
  • Coach and mentor Charge Nurses, Staff Nurses, and members of leadership team as delegated by Clinical Nursing Director.

Clinical Practice:
  • Maintain significant presence within 7 East, rounding on patients and families, and interfacing with staff, to facilitate patient care excellence and high reliability. Anticipate and respond to patient/family issues and concerns.

Management of Clinical Area:
  • Participate in the development and implementation of unit or area goals and objectives.
  • Identify and plan for staffing consistent with the needs of the patient population and budgetary requirements.
  • Participate in planning and problem solving of daily unit/area operations, priorities of patient services, and urgent and emergent care.
  • Interpret and implement the Hospital and University policies and procedures and the standards of regulatory agencies.
  • Coordinate performance evaluation activities for unit staff as delegated by the Clinical Nursing Director. Participate in developing of unit/area policy/procedure and standards of Nursing Care.

Quality Improvement and Research:
  • Participate in planning, coordinating, and evaluating unit quality improvement activities.
  • Promote the integration of research findings into clinical practice by unit nursing staff.
  • Promote staff involvement in clinical research, as applicable.

Financial:
  • Participate in the monitoring of Department payroll and commodity expenditures.
  • Provide input into the payroll and commodity budget planning process.

Required Qualifications*

Applicant must meet one of the following:

Bachelors of Science in Nursing (or)

Associate degree or Diploma in Nursing AND a Masters Degree in Nursing.
  • Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of Michigan
  • Minimum five (5) years RN experience.
  • Minimum two (2) years of recent (within the last 5 years) RN experience in a Pediatric Hematology Oncology Bone Marrow Transplant Unit.
  • Completion of a Nurse Leadership certification within two (2) years of accepting this position or when eligible to certify, whichever comes first. Certification is expected to be maintained while in this leadership role. Examples include Certified Nurse Manager and Leader (CNML) or, Nurse Executive (NE-BC). Certifications must be recognized by the Magnet Recognition Program and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC.) See full list here .
  • Demonstrated leadership skills including creative and effective problem-solving, ability to effectively collaborate within a multidisciplinary team, and ability to direct nursing practice and apply critical thinking skills/judgment to a variety of situations.

Desired Qualifications*
  • Previous supervisory/management experience
  • Previous experience in Pediatric Hematology Oncology Bone Marrow Transplant Unit within last two (2) years.
  • Certification in specialty: CPHON; BMTCN
  • Certification in Perinatal Nursing or Nursing Management/Administration
  • Knowledge of Michigan Medicine policies and practice
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in verbal and written communication, including conflict management/resolution.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently in meeting project/assignment deadlines and expectations within competing priorities.
  • Evidence of continuing education/development in nursing and/or leadership skills.

Work Schedule

Hours/Week: 40 hours

Shift: Day/Eve shift; 8-hour shifts. Flexibility to cover needs of the unit.
