General Description

Responsible for assessing students' physical development level and functional deficits; provide appropriate evidence-based interventions to meet the objectives of students' IEPs; provide appropriate recommendations for student accommodations, adapted equipment and assistive technology, provide instruction and training as required for school staff, students' and parents; and provide recommendations for program development.

Essential Job Functions

Essential Job Functions:
  • Assists in identifying students requiring evaluation and/or services.
  • Assesses students' fine motor, self-care, development skills and sensory processing to determine functional deficits that are impacting access and participation to the specialized education program.
  • Follows all LEA and VDOE guidelines regarding special education timelines for completion and submission of written evaluations.
  • Maintains ongoing and up to date documentation of all service provided and documentation required for Medicaid billing.
  • Works cooperatively with school staff, parents and personnel in community services to assist in determining appropriate and required related service of occupational therapy.
  • Provides recommendations for appropriate accommodations, modifications or adapted equipment.
  • Provides services in the least restrictive environment with the ultimate goals of having the student able to generalize new learned skills in a variety of environments.
  • Provides guidance and required information to the OT/PT technician when participating in a students' program with the therapist.
  • Supervises OT or OTA students according to departmental and AOTA guidelines.
  • Participates in trainings, meetings, workshops, etc.
  • Assists in program planning when students receiving therapy move from one school or program to another.
  • Demonstrates commitment to improving professional competence.
  • Assesses student learning on an ongoing basis and alters instruction to meet group/individual needs.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Equipment Operation:
Operates personal computer, basic office equipment and medical equipment related to occupational therapy.

Contacts:
Teachers, parents, instructional assistants, adapted equipment technician, outside agencies and therapy providers.

Work Direction:
Provides directions to individuals in the features required for adapted equipment and any changes or modifications.

Supervision:
N/A

Decision Making:
High level of decisions in the assessment of students with disabilities; determines appropriate adapted equipment required by a student.

Physical Demands:
Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to use a telephone, to enter data into a computer terminal; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear, understand speech and speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly at normal levels indoors and on the telephone. Physical agility to bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk and reach overhead. Frequent movement throughout the school facilities is required. Requires lifting of objects up to 50 pounds and moving of students weighing up to 150 pounds with assistive equipment may be necessary. Occasional movement of students by wheelchair and other mechanical devices may be necessary.

Work Environment:
Duties are typically performed in a school setting. The noise level in the work environment is quiet to moderate.

Qualifications

Working knowledge of the concepts, principles and methodologies of occupational therapy in the educational setting. Working knowledge and understanding of Special Education policies and procedures on the county, state and federal level. Demonstrated ability to develop instructional goals and to design, write and deliver Individualized Educational Plans. Demonstrated ability to communicate program goals orally and in writing. Demonstrated ability in decision making, problem analysis, conflict resolution, interpersonal relationships and planning. Ability to be flexible in areas of responsibility. Efficient in the use of technology to write and share reports, provide electronic input on students' IEPs, complete Medicaid billing and complete required department documentation.

Requirements

Must hold a valid license to practice as an Occupational Therapist as issued by the Virginia Board of Medicine. Must have a valid driver's license with acceptable driving record and a vehicle available for business use. Must be First Aid/ CPR, AED certified and maintain current certifications.
