Salary: $24.29/hour during Pre-Service Institute, $55,000 *1/yr. once interim certification is obtained

Bargaining Unit: Detroit Federation of Teachers (DFT)

Position Summary :

On the Rise Academy is a 3-year Michigan Department of Education-approved alternative teacher certification program that prepares participants to become exceptional teachers who will uphold the mission, vision, and values of Detroit Public Schools Community District. Applying to the Fellow role with On the Rise Academy means you are enrolling into a teacher education program (similar to a teacher education program at a traditional college or university) which requires you to teach in a DPSCD school. Individuals admitted to On the Rise Academy will be required to participate in and complete all program requirements to remain in the Fellow role, including but not limited to:
  • Pre-Service Institute which takes place from June 2024 - August 2024
  • Pass The Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) in one of the following certification areas:
      • Lower Elementary (PK-3) (Tests 117-120)
      • Upper Elementary (3-6) (Tests 121-124)
      • Secondary Mathematics (6-12) (Test 022)
      • Secondary Integrated Science (6-12) (Test 094)
  • Mandatory content related coursework
  • Supervised field experience and coaching
  • Passing all required performance screen related tasks

Fellows who meet Pre-Service requirements will be recommended for an Interim Teaching Certificate and will receive a conditional offer for a promotion to a contract teaching position within the\ District while they continue their training. Fellows who complete all program requirements, including passing performance screens, will be recommended for a standard teaching certificate after their third year of effective teaching. The program is $5,000, though tuition will be forgiven for participants who remain teaching in DPSCD in their certification area for a minimum of 6 years. Minimum Qualifications:
  • Possess a bachelor's degree from an institution accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools or an equivalent agency.
  • Possess a cumulative GPA of 2.95 or higher.
  • Must not already be a certified teacher.

Essential Functions:
  • Attend regularly and engage fully in a rigorous training model which includes, field experience in a summer school classroom and completion of online and face-to-face coursework during the Pre-Service Institute and during the school year.
  • Participate in 1:1 and small group coaching during Pre-Service Institute and the school year.
  • Under the supervision of the model teacher, plan and facilitate intensive instruction to students during DPSCD's summer learning program, using DPSCD's instructional materials.
  • Collaborate with Fellows, teachers, school and District leadership, parents, and community members to ensure summer learning students receive high-quality instruction and social/emotional supports.
  • Collaborate with supporting teachers and On the Rise Academy staff to share student progress with parents and families.
  • Manage student records including attendance, student feedback/grading, and progress reports.
  • Build relationships with students, create systems and routines to manage classroom and behavior in class, as well as during non-instructional times (e.g. lunch, recess, transitions).
  • Follow all District policies, work rules, essential functions, and procedures to which regular teachers are subject and which good teaching practice dictates.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
