Job Summar y

Under the direction of the Operating Engineer IV or Director of Physical Plant and Operating Engineer III, supervises the maintaining and monitoring of building and power plant mechanical and operating systems. These systems include heating, ventilation, air conditioning, water pumping, refrigeration, life safety, security, building automation, and energy conservation to supply heat, light, and electrical power for hospitals, residential institutions, and other County facilities. Supervises the positions of Operating Engineer I, Mechanical Assistant, Fireman, Fireman Helper, Boiler Washer and other staff as necessary. Performs other related job duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Currently employed with Cook County as an Operating Engineer I is required.
  • One (1) year of full-time work experience as an Operating Engineer I with Cook County is required.
  • Five (5) years full-time paid work experience as a Journeyman Operating Engineer I is required.
  • Current and valid Stationary Engineer's License issued by the City of Chicago is required.
  • Valid Driver's license is required.
  • Possession of a CFC (Chlorofluorocarbon) card is required.
This position is considered a safety-sensitive position. Candidates who are selected to fill safety-sensitive positions must pass a required drug test as part of the pre-employment background check process.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS

Thorough and extensive knowledge of commercial and industrial heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration, and mechanical systems. Knowledge of commercial and industrial electrical, plumbing, and steam fitting systems. Knowledge of current industry standards and regulations. Extensive skill in locating and identifying equipment maintenance problems, making emergency repairs and taking corrective action. Ability to communicate verbally and in writing. Ability to read mechanical drawings and blue prints. Skill in the supervision of Operating Engineers, Mechanical Assistants, Firemen, Fireman Helper, Boiler Washer and other staff as necessary. This position occasionally requires various types of physical exertion, including, but not limited to lifting, pulling, pushing, and moving objects of moderate to heavy weight.
