VDOT's Fredericksburg District has an exciting opportunity available in its Structure and Bridge Maintenance Department. We are seeking qualified candidates to fill an Operator vacancy. This position repairs, maintains and replaces bridges and structures in accordance with established safety standards, VDOT specifications and procedures, and equipment operation standards.

• Ability to read and to follow oral and written instructions
• Knowledge of highway and bridge maintenance methods, equipment, materials and safety practices
• Skill in fabricating steel components and welding
• Skill in carpentry, concrete forming and finishing
• Ability to work at heights, in heavy traffic, over and in water and under other adverse conditions
• Ability to perform mathematical calculations to measure and lay out constructed elements on bridges and culverts
• Ability to perform minor repairs and preventive maintenance on equipment and tools
• Ability to work well individually and as a team member
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
• Ability to obtain valid CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter
• Skill in the operation and use of light and medium-duty equipment such as dump trucks, loaders, backhoes, etc.

VDOT is an emergency response agency and this position is the core of this requirement, therefore you will work outside of normal work hours during emergency operations.

NOTE: This position requires approved safety shoes. Preference will be given to current CDL carriers.

Minimum Qualifications

• Ability to perform heavy manual labor
• Knowledge of highway and bridge maintenance methods, equipment, materials and safety practices
• Skill in the operation and use of light and medium-duty equipment, as well as in the use of hand and power tools
• Ability to perform mathematical calculations to measure and lay out constructed elements on bridges and culverts
• Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter
• Ability to perform minor repairs and preventive maintenance on equipment and tools
• Skill in carpentry, concrete forming and finishing, and welding
• Ability to work at heights, over and, or in water, in heavy traffic and under other adverse conditions

Additional Considerations

• Experience in carpentry, building forms and false works, and concrete placement and finishing
• Experience with light to medium-duty equipment and hand and power tools
• Experience in bridge maintenance or construction
• Valid Certified Crane Operator with appropriate endorsements
• A combination of training, experience, or education in construction or related field desired
• Experience fabricating or welding steel components
• Valid Commercial Driver's License with appropriate endorsements
• Flagger

NOTE: All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. Effective February 7, 2022, new Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL to a Class A from a Class B, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment in and payment for the course upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement.

This position is designated as essential to emergency operations and may be required to work outside of normal work hours, on weekends and holidays during emergency situations which may include but are not limited to inclement weather, disaster response and emergency operations to ensure the safety of the traveling public.
