Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:

Optician is responsible for assisting the optometrist(s) in the direct provision of primary eye care services to patients of the health center. The Optician is responsible for assisting patients in all aspects of ordering glasses and frames and managing the optical inventory.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities :
  • Assists each patient in making the best lens and frame selection for their individual needs.
  • An optician will obtain lens recommendations from the doctor and assists the patient in their frame selection.
  • Responsible for informing the patient of all charges for glasses and explaining payment and warranty policy.
  • Completes appropriate order forms and order the glasses in a timely manner.
  • Adjust the frames, explains possible adaptation time expected with the new prescription, cleans the lenses, select a case, and explains how to care for the lenses.
  • Responsible for meeting with frame representatives and keeping the dispensary up to date with appropriate variety and supply of frames. Attention should be paid to which frames are most popular and changes in styles or fashions.
  • Tracks of frame inventory using the current inventory processes in place with Great Plains and Eclinical Works.
  • Monitors and manages the supply of frame cases, repair parts, cleaning solution, etc.
  • Responsible for educating every patient about the additional options available for their glasses such as non-glare coatings and UV protective lenses.
  • Responsible for keeping the optical area clean and neat at all times.
  • Cross-trains in pre-testing type duties and willing to help if needed.

  • Requirements, Special Skills or Knowledge :
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Ability to attend to multiple tasks at the same time and to prioritize assignments and responsibilities to ensure compliance with established deadlines and protocols.
  • Effective oral communication skills are required to communicate with patients.
  • Trustworthy handling confidential information.
  • Able to work in an active and fast-paced work environment.
  • Able to work with difficult patients from time to time.


  • Preferred Requirements, Special Skills or Knowledge :
  • Optical experience and/or American Board of Optician certification.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish).
