Summary:
Identifies, manages and rehabilitates injuries to High School athletes. Uses techniques for prevention of injuries. Evaluates and manages injuries. Provide 1:1 and group care preparing athletes for practice and competition. Prepare rehabilitation programs for injured athletes. Develop training programs for injured and non-injured athletes. Evaluates, assesses, and treats musculoskeletal injuries and sports concussions that present in the school setting, in consultation with and oversight from a physician. Provides care in accordance with Athletic Training Certification in accordance with Summa Health policy, procedures and protocols. Assists medical staff with completing required medical documentation, statistics and other administrative paperwork per Summa Health policy and at the request of the department/supervisor. Maintains medical record for each athlete. Works as a liaison with school personnel, Summa Health Leadership, and Summa Health medical team. Work collaboratively with school administration and athletic coaches. May assist Summa Health Medical Group with special events and additional coverage as needed.

Provides excellent patient care through the special skill set of an athletic trainer that augments and supports the services of the physicians and other health care providers. Provides efficient care to the patient by utilizing a team approach that insures timely and effective diagnosis and treatments, including immediate home exercise instruction for the patient with musculoskeletal injuries. Assists physicians in making appropriate rehabilitation referrals.

Formal Education Required:
a. Bachelor's Degree in athletic training or closely related field
b. Current license issued by the Ohio OTPTAT Training Board to practice Athletic Training in the State of Ohio
c. Certified by the Board of Certification, Inc. for athletic trainers
d. Maintains AT license in good standing
e. CPR through the American Heart Association for the Healthcare Provider (BLS)

Experience & Training Required:
a. Past experience in a sports medicine and/or orthopedic physician practice preferred

a. Ability to communicate verbally and in writing with physicians, patients, parents, administrators, school personnel, other hospital/medical staff and external publics
b. Competent in computers as it relates to Microsoft Office, electronic medical records, etc.
c. Ability to make effective presentations in front of groups
d. Ability to travel from location to location throughout the workday
e. Must be willing to work with persons with disabilities
f. Independent, requiring minimal direction or requests to assist while also seeking out opportunities to advance patient care
g. Motivated, self-starter - always looking to be productive and helpful; always looking for avenues to expand the role of the athletic trainer to better serve the patient
h. Critical thinking and problem solving skills
i. Flexible to respond to change in environment, schedule, patient type, processes.
j. Demonstrates flexibility/adaptability in meeting environmental constraints and demands placed on our service
k. Must be willing and able to acquire additional training/certifications which will improve the operations of the physician practice including but not limited to casting/bracing, ergonomics, etc.
l. Population Specific Competency: Ability to effectively interact with populations of patients/customers with an understanding of their needs for self-respect and dignity

4. Level of Physical Demands:
a. Very Heavy: Exerts in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force continuously to move objects.
b. Manual dexterity sufficient to operate specialized equipment and fabricate pads, splints, preventative taping/bracing, etc.
c. Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination
d. Requires standing and walking for extended periods of time
e. Requires exposure to communicable disease, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, and other potentially hazardous conditions common to a clinical environment
f. Requires adequate vision and hearing to normal range
g. Must be able to continuously stand and walk; frequently squat, climb stairs, bend to the floor, reach over the shoulder, kneel, twist, sit, stand and remain in uncomfortable positions for prolonged periods of time
h. May be required to drive to other locations and support other schools
