The Plant Operations Tech - Painter/Carpenter is responsible for servicing, repairing, and maintaining equipment and space under the responsibility of all Plant Operations departmental functions supporting the hospital mission, vision, and facility goals. The Plant Operations Tech works under the supervision of and in coordination with the Assistant Director of Plant Operations and the Director of Plant Operations. This position establishes effective working relationships with all constituencies, including patients, physicians, employees, volunteers, and vendors. The Plant Operations Tech - Painter/Carpenter assists the Assistant Director of Plant Operations and the Director of Plant Operations in identifying and remedying all issues concerning the Plant Operations department. The Tech works to meet departmental and facility goals.
The Plant Operations Tech - Painter/Carpenter is responsible for the construction, demolition, repair, and maintenance of walls, partitions, equipment, furniture, and other parts of hospital buildings, using hand and power tools according to written and oral instructions. Applies coats of paint, varnish, enamels, or lacquer to decorate and protect the hospital's interior and exterior surfaces, trimmings, and fixtures, using paintbrushes, rollers, scrapers, etc. Performs all types of drywall work from installation to taping and bedding, sanding, and patchwork.

Qualifications:
  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • Good working knowledge of repairing and maintaining equipment found in a hospital setting other than that maintained by Bio-Med services.
  • Good aural activity is needed to detect malfunctions in equipment.
  • Good eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity.
  • Good communication skills
Responsibilities:
  • Meets all required deadlines, demonstrates discretionary ability in establishing priorities.
  • Works in coordination with the Assistant Director of Plant Operations and Director of Plant Operations in fulfilling departmental goals, strategies, priorities, standards and their implementation.
  • Completes work orders as submitted or consults the Assistant Director of Plant Operations or Director of Plant Operations on work orders in which the request needs a higher level of authorization to be completed.
  • Preps, primes, and paints surfaces using brushes, spray guns, or paint-roller
  • Installs and preps drywall
  • Cuts and installs Formica as required
  • Calculates quantity of materials needed, selects stock, tools, and supplies for the repair of hospital
    buildings
  • Repairs partitions, doors, windows, floors, furniture, and building framework consisting of wood or metal, using power tools such as a planer, sander, saws and drills or hand tools such as planes, chisels, hammers, rasps, saws, and related equipment
  • Measures and marks in prescribed dimensions using rulers, tape measures, calipers, compass' and marking pencils to guide cutting operations
  • May perform related tasks such as replacing ceiling tiles
  • Smoothes surface, using sandpaper, wire brushes, or steel wool and remove old paint from surfaces using paint remover, scrapers, wire brushes or blowtorch to prepare surfaces for painting
  • Fills nail holes, cracks, and joints with putty, plaster, or other fillers
  • Selects premixed paints or prepares paint to match specified colors by blending and mixing required proportions of pigment, oil, and thinning and drying substances
  • Spreads cloth or canvas over floors and furniture to protect them from spattered paint
  • Rigs staging or erects scaffolding
  • Adheres to instructed infection control precautions inside the hospital such as wet sanding, covering return vents, and erecting temporary work barriers
  • Reads blueprints and specifications
  • Performs all other duties as assigned
  • Maintains records in compliance with State/JCAHO/OSHA requirements.
  • Participates in the development of departmental safety and disaster policies.
  • Places orders for parts and supplies as needed with the authorization of the Director of Plant Operations.
  • Contacts outside service organizations and schedules repairs as needed with authorization of the Director of Plant Operations
  • Participates in the education program for new employees and the annual education for all employees.
  • Participates in the Hazardous Materials and Waste Management program.
  • Supports the Medical Equipment Management program.
  • Participates in reviewing, summarizing, and documenting problems and actions regarding the Life Safety Code.
  • Helps provide and support security efforts included within the Security Management program.
  • Participates in reviewing, summarizing, providing inspections, documenting inspections, resolving problems, and all other duties necessary to fulfill the requirements of the Utility Management Program.
  • Responsibility for reviewing the Baylor Scott & White Medical Center Frisco Emergency Preparedness Plan.
  • Assist in performing inspections for environmental hazards and unsafe practices included within the Safety Management program.
  • Responsible to take evening, weekend and holiday on call duty as required.
  • Adheres to the Baylor Scott & White Medical Center MPACT philosophy.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
