The DOJ, Civil Litigation Unit is looking to hire a detail orientated individual, who thrives in a fast-past environment. If you enjoy managing multiple tasks and have a legal background, please consider applying for our Paralegal position.

This is a Limited Term Employment (LTE) position. It is anticipated that this position will work part-time (approximately 20 hours/week) and allows for flexible hours .

This position is headquartered at the Risser Justice Center located at 17 West Main Street in Madison.

Position Summary

The Civil Litigation Unit handles a wide variety of matters on behalf of the State of Wisconsin, its agencies, the University of Wisconsin System, and individual state employees.

This position provides a full range of professional litigation assistance and in-depth paraprofessional support to assistant attorneys general including: drafting legal documents and discovery responses; electronically organizing and compiling case files; gathering and analyzing records and facts for various phases of litigation; assistance in preparation for depositions and trials; assistance in witness preparation; identifying and collecting exhibits; providing information to other staff and managers throughout the department and general public; electronically filing documents with the courts; and maintaining contact with client agencies. This position will work with multiple, often competing, priorities.

Salary Information

The Paralegal position is in pay schedule 07 and pay range 04. The starting pay will be between $27.00 - $30.00 /hour. Pay for current or former state employees will follow the provisions found in the State of Wisconsin Compensation Plan.

Job Details

This position may be eligible to work remotely up to 60% as part of a hybrid schedule, following an initial training period, and may require reporting on multiple consecutive workdays, if needed. Travel to the headquarters is not eligible for travel reimbursement.

High speed internet access is required to meet the needs of remote work.

The Department of Justice does not sponsor work visas at the time of hire or anytime during employment. All persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and complete the required Employment Eligibility Form I-9.

A background check, including fingerprints, will be completed on applicants prior to selection.

This is a Limited Term Employment (LTE) position and is limited to the maximum of 1039 hours in a 12-month period. Limited Term Employees must be a resident of Wisconsin.

Qualifications

Minimally qualified applicants must have education, training and/or experience in the following :
  • Providing general office support and legal support tasks (proofreading documents, filing and record keeping, cite checking, structuring briefs/pleadings, filing documents with the courts, and calendar management, etc.)
  • Proficiency with common office technology (word processing like MS Word, spreadsheet programs like Excel, Ou tlook or comparable email/calendar software, Internet resources, database programs).
  • Drafting legal documents (including pleadings, affidavits, findings of fact, discovery requests and responses, etc.).
  • Managing multiple tasks and prioritizing competing deadlines.
In addition to the minimum qualifications, a well-qualified applicant will have education, training, and/or experience in the following:
  • Working with Adobe Acrobat and case management software (e.g. Time Matters).
  • Supporting attorneys at trial, including the set-up of trial equipment.
