SUMMARY:

Paramedics are responsible for delivering quality care to a varied patient population (infant, pediatric, adult, and geriatric). They observe and document patient response to care. They provide guidance and assistance to RN's and non-licensed staff in acute care setting. They are accountable for the caliber of patient care performed by her/himself. They promote and coordinate team work with physicians and associates. They interact effectively with other departments. They provides customer service to patients' families, visitors, physicians, co-workers, and other medical and non-medical persons. They deliver direct patient care as delineated within the Paramedic scope of practice and the Standards of Practice of the Emergency Department and the organization.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

* Keeps abreast of all pertinent federal, state and facility regulations, laws and policies as they presently exist and as they change or are modified.
* Understands and adheres to compliance standards as they appear in the Corporate Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct, and Conflicts of Interest Policy.
* Demonstrates age-specific skills as required by position.
* Offers suggestions on ways to improve operations of department and reduce costs.
* Attends all mandatory education programs.
* Improves self-knowledge through voluntarily attending continuing education/certification classes.
* Maintains required competency levels as identified in written exams, skills checklists, skills labs, annual safety and health requirements as well as service excellence education hours requirements.
* Willing to cross-train in order to better assist co-workers and to provide maximum efficiency in department.
* Volunteers/participates on hospital committees, functions, and department projects.
* Manages resources effectively.
* Reports equipment in need of repair in order to extend life of equipment.
* Makes good use of time so as to not create needless overtime.
* Documents data in a relivent format and completes all documentation prior to shift end.
* Assist with order requests, transcribes orders treatments, procedures, lab work, other diagnostic procedures and completes nursing interventions and physician's orders in a timely manner during shift.
* Follows Nursing Practice Guidelines and policies related to medication administration and IV therapy.
* Accurately states patient's condition to co-workers at shift report, physician, and to other associates when required, using appropriate hand off method and documents appropriately.
* Oversees all care on assigned patients, assuring a high caliber of patient is provided.
* Correctly and accurately recognizes respiratory or cardiac arrest and immediately beings CPR and calls Code Blue.
* Assumes responsibility and accountability for individualized judgments and actions.
* Demonstrates efficient, effective, and prompt responses to any unit/patient crisis situation.
* Demonstrates dependability and accountability in all assigned tasks.
* Provides service with respect for human dignity and the uniqueness of the patient unrestricted by consideration of socioeconomic status, personal attribute or the nature of health problems.
* Protects patients' valuables as directed in hospital policies and procedures.
* Follows policies related to information release, confidentiality, patient rights, chart access, and advance directives.
* Demonstrates strict adherence to all hospital safety policies, Infection Control policies, restraint policies, fire reporting, drill activities, equipment maintenance and storage.
* Adheres to Standard of Care as defined by the Paramedic scope of practice in the state of Georgia.
* Maintains required competency levels as identified in written exams, skills checklist, and skills labs.
* Attends a minimum of 80% of Departmental Staff meetings.
* Offers suggestions to supervisors on ways to improve operations of department and reduce costs.
* Recognizes the healthcare consumer as the authority on their own health by honoring their care preferences. Includes patient, family, and other healthcare providers in collecting and prioritizing PHI.
* Notifies physician of significant changes in patient status, including critical results.
* In collaboration with Registered Nurse, identifies and documents actual or potential risk to the patient's health and safety or barriers to health based on assessment.
* Makes patient/family rounds to assist with prioritization and assuring needs met, quality care provided and concerns addressed.
* Advocates for responsible and appropriate use of interventions to minimize unwarranted or unwanted treatment and/or patient suffering.
* Provides/ documents age appropriate care in a culturally sensitive manner and updates as appropriate.
* Safely administers patient care, medications and treatments in accordance with standards of practice.
* Communicates clinical information/findings to all appropriate care team members as indicated, including handoff of patients to inpatient units.
* Coordinates all facets of care with the patient, family and other appropriate care team members.
* Notifies management/ nursing supervisor of any patient injuries, unresolved complaints, employee injuries or unexpected/ unusual situations, near misses documenting on appropriate forms.
* Maintains awareness of current professional trends and procedure/policy changes, which affect the delivery of patient care and unit activities.
* Documents legibly using concise terms, correct terminology and approved abbreviations.
* Identifies and utilizes necessary technology and resources required for patient care.
* Demonstrates basic competency in the operation of a computer to include the following: Keyboard and Mouse functionality, General knowledge of computer software applications, Management of email including reviewing organizational email at least weekly.
* Demonstrates ability to review computer generated data to understand the patient's condition and monitor outcomes: Reviews trended data for vital signs and pain, Identifies patient primary diagnosis and medical history.
* Identifies daignostic test results.
* Utilizes confidentiality with use of the EMR.

* Diploma in Paramedic

CREDENTIALS:

* Paramedic

OTHER INFORMATION:

* Graduate of an EMT-P program
* Currently licensed to practice as an EMT-P in the state of Georgia
