AIDE SPECIAL EDUCATION JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE: Aide for Special Education

SUPERVISES: N/A

JOB GOAL:

1. To assist teacher in achieving teaching objectives by working with individual students or small groups to help them achieve the skill levels of the class as a whole.

2. To provide a well-organized, smoothly functioning class environment in which students can take full advantage of the instructional program and available resource program.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Possesses High School Diploma or equivalent.

2. Demonstrates aptitude or competence for assigned responsibilities.

3. Demonstrates ability to type at least 50 words per minute.

4. Holds a valid state bus driver's license.

5. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

REPORTS TO: Teacher and/or School Principal

SALARY: To be determined commensurate with local salary matrix, credentials, and experience.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Work with individual exceptional or small groups of students to reinforce learning of material or skills initially introduced by the teacher.
  2. Assists the teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing material or skills bases on a sympathetic understanding of individual students, their needs, interests, and abilities.
  3. Checks notebooks, corrects papers and supervises testing and makeup work, as assigned by the teacher.
  4. Assists with such large group activities as drill work, reading aloud, and storytelling.
  5. Alerts the regular teacher to any problem or special information about an individual student.
  6. Maintains the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students as is expected of fully licensed teachers.
  7. Participates in in-service training programs, as assigned.
  8. Assists with the supervision of exceptional students during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, and field trips.
  9. Assists with lunch, snack, and clean-up routines.
  10. Keeps bulletin board and other classroom learning displays up to date.
  11. Operates and cares for equipment used in the classroom for instructional purposes.
  12. Distributes and collects workbooks, papers, and other materials for instruction.
  13. Assists in the collection and record keeping of monies.
  14. Assists with wash-up and toilet routines.
  15. Checks and records student attendance.
  16. Reads to students, listens to students read, and participates in other forms or oral communication with students.
  17. Will obtain, when deemed necessary, an appropriate bus driver's license in order to transport exceptional students to and from school.
  18. Performs such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as may be assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

    • Ability to work with emotionally impaired students.
  • Ability to maintain composure under stressful conditions.
  • Ability to assume responsibility for supervising students, understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
    • Regularly required to talk or hear.
    • Frequently required to stand, walk, sit and talk or hear.
    • Occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle as to operate office equipment; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
    • Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Employee needs to be able to tell where a sound is coming from and hear in a noisy environment.
  • Occasionally will assist in physical management of students.


WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. The employee must work with public and other staff, continuously meeting multiple demands from several people.


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Length of contract and salary will be established by the Board.

EVALUATION:

Performance of the job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Classified Professional Personnel.
