Why does the job exist?

This position is assigned to Pecos Canyon State Park. This position provides facility, grounds, forestry management, vehicle and equipment maintenance and contributes to the agency by providing customer service and ensuring the well-being and safety to visitors and staff. Responsible for administrative logs and park supply inventories. This position will perform manual labor necessary to develop, maintain or protect resources in the park. This position will perform road and trail maintenance to maintain access to campgrounds and facilities including clearing and plowing snow. This position will assist with providing interpretive/educational programs. This position may oversee and provide direction to seasonal/temporary staff and volunteers.

How does it get done?

The Incumbent is responsible for the day-to-day maintenance and safety of the Park. Maintenance of the vehicles, equipment and tools. The incumbent will need to communicate with the general public to preserve the Park's natural and cultural resources. Assist with forest management of hazard trees following all forestry recommendations. Incumbent will perform trail and road maintenance including clearing and plowing snow. The incumbent will need to be familiar with the state park policies and procedures and rules. Scheduled preventive maintenance on vehicles, equipment, and facilities will need to be identified and scheduled. Incumbent will assist in providing interpretive/educational programs for visitors. Additionally, appropriate budget to purchase supplies, repair/replacement parts so they are on hand at the time the maintenance is scheduled. This position will perform administrative duties necessary for this position, complete log books, requests quotes, assist in the procurement process for projects and perform collection and verification of revenues due to the state.

Internal and external customers, visitors throughout the state of New Mexico and surrounding states who are campers, hikers, and boaters that come to visit the park for a variety of reasons. Local community businesses in surrounding areas of the park.

Experience in equipment use and maintenance.

Minimum Qualification

High School Diploma or Equivalent and one (1) year of experience in parks, monuments, museums, interpretive/educational ranger, field archaeologist and/or ruins preservationist at a historic site. Substitutions Apply. See Substitution Table below.

Working Conditions

The position is labor intensive to include: digging, bending, pushing, pulling, and lifting, as well as standing for long periods of time. The position requires the use of various hand and power tools, as well as operating vehicles and heavy equipment. One may be required to work in adverse weather conditions, extreme cold and heat for extended periods of time. Shift work may be required on holidays or during park events. Emergency maintenance situations may also arise requiring extended hours of work. Sitting at a desk or computer workstation is also required. Must be willing to accept assignment/transfer to another geographic location. Extensive travel in region wide area. Weekend/holiday work required.
