Mission

Responsible for preparing, conducting, and evaluating behind-the-wheel operator training for fixed route operators. Conducts interviews, operator orientation, pre-licensing training, and transit safety programs and provides training assistance to the Training and Safety staff as needed. Assists with documenting, evaluating, and analyzing the effectiveness of employee participation in training programs. This position reports to the Operations Manager.

Profile

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assists with designing and implementing training programs to develop the skills of operations employees to include non-cdl and cdl new hire training programs, remedial, and refresher training.
  • Facilitates behind-the-wheel training and orientation programs for all fixed route-operators.
  • Presents information using a variety of instructional techniques and formats such as role-playing, simulations, team exercises, group discussions, videos, and lectures
  • Provides assessments and evaluations of employee skill levels daily
  • Performs all preparation training for the CDL test
  • Ensures all new hires have minimum general qualifications, including licenses, permits, DOT cards, etc.
  • Recommend route/stop changes to the supervisor and conduct safety site assessments when needed.
  • Trains and motivates others toward proper driving and safety standards
  • Attends Safety Committee meetings and assists with providing management with statistical data on operator performance and training needs and/improvements
  • Collaborates with Operations Supervisor and Safety & Training Manager to deliver comprehensive safety meetings and plans.
  • Maintains accurate records and be able to prepare complete and comprehensive reports
  • Assists with the monitoring of safe operating practices
  • Performs ongoing ride-alongs to ensure that the desired knowledge, skills, and attitudes transfer from the classroom to predefined on-the-job behavior
  • Provides information and training in equipment updates/improvements
  • Assists with developing alternative training methods if expected outcomes are not achieved
  • Enforces safety program/culture within department; coordinate re-training and safety instruction; maintains a positive work environment by providing all employees with fair and equitable training opportunities
  • Other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
  • Associates degree from an accredited institution or equivalent work experience
  • Three to five years' related experience in training or supervision
  • Valid commercial driver's license with Class B Passenger endorsement in the State of North Carolina and a good driving record
  • Thorough knowledge of local street system and major buildings/facilities
  • Thorough knowledge of transportation policies and procedures
  • Thorough knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations governing bus operations
  • Ability to maintain a flexible schedule and work emergency shifts
  • Ability to record information accurately and quickly and maintain simple records
  • Working understanding of PC's including Microsoft Office Packages
  • Ability to work with the public and drivers in a courteous manner
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions
  • Ability to be dependable and report to work during adverse weather conditions
  • Must be able to meet the DOT physical requirements and maintain a DOT card
  • Familiar with NCDOT third party testing procedures and requirements
  • Must be able to work early mornings, nights, and weekends as needed


An equivalent combination of related education and experience may be substituted for the above stated minimums excluding High School Diploma, GED, Licenses, or Certifications.

Working Conditions:

Works in an environment where there is some exposure to dust, noise, or temperature. May be moderately exposed to unpleasant working conditions to include dust, noise, temperature, weather, petroleum products, and chemicals while visiting the garage facility, during which the incumbent should observe all policies and procedures, safety precautions and regulations, and use all protective clothing and devices provided. Travel may be required to and from other TTA Office locations.

Physical Requirements:

Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Walking and standing are required only occasionally.
