HOURS: Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm

SUMMARY:

The Pathologist Assistant performs both autopsy/postmortem examination and surgical specimen grossing. Prepares tissue samples and takes photographs, dissect specimens, records physical features, and obtains cultures following established standards and practices. Accesses medical records to prepare reports, prepare for pathology conferences, or coordinate specimens for consult. Direct supervision is not required for specimen grossing or test performance. This position does not report or interpret patient test results.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

* Keeps abreast of all pertinent federal, state and facility regulations, laws and policies as they presently exist and as they change or are modified.
* Understands and adheres to compliance standards as they appear in the Corporate Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct, and Conflicts of Interest Policy.
* Demonstrates age-specific skills as required by position.
* Offers suggestions on ways to improve operations of department and reduce costs.
* Attends all mandatory education programs.
* Improves self-knowledge through voluntarily attending continuing education/certification classes.
* Maintains required competency levels as identified in written exams, skills checklists, skills labs, annual safety and health requirements as well as service excellence education hours requirements.
* Willing to cross-train in order to better assist co-workers and to provide maximum efficiency in department.
* Volunteers/participates on hospital committees, functions, and department projects.
* Manages resources effectively.
* Reports equipment in need of repair in order to extend life of equipment.
* Makes good use of time so as to not create needless overtime.
* Adheres to the policy for proper identification of patients and patient samples.
* Assists pathologists with frozen sections, grossing, and autopsies using proper techniques.
* Uses pathology information system for accessioning, history, and status of specimens.
* Uses organization information system to access medical records to verify and prepare reports.
* Performs day to day instrument and equipment maintenance as necessary.
* Performs, records, and interprets quality control as necessary.
* Maintains State and CAP requirements.
* Provides guidance, assistance, and instruction to other grossing personnel.

EDUCATION:

* Bachelor's Degree in a Related Field
