Summary

Performs duties pertaining to activities involved in the care of patient, including collection and preparation of Pathology/Cytology specimens and specimen registration. Performs duties pertaining to organization, storage, retrieval, and distribution of Pathology/Cytology specimens and reports. Maintains departmental inventory control. Requires judgement and experience for the preparing and processing of body fluid specimens. Knowledge and experience of gross description dictation of endoscopic/needle core biopsies and Cytology specimens. In addition, training of submitting departments and offices. Knowledge and use of International Classification of Disease (ICD-9) coding of diagnosis. Performs Quality monitoring relating to Pathology/Cytology specimen orders and compliance. Population served by this position is all ages.

Responsibilities

Retrieve tissue from designated areas on a routine basis. 2. Set up billing form with appropriate ICD-9 code. 3. Accurately register and accession all Pathology/Cytology cases into Soft Path systems. 4. Accurately make tissue cassettes and set up appropriate fixative and instruments needed for all types of specimens received. 5. Accurately weigh and if indicated open any specimens including colons, gallbladders, and uteri as requested by Pathologist. Also able to initiate gross examination of selected specimens including bisection of femoral heads and extraction of marrow from rib specimens as requested by Pathologist. 6. Accurately performs gross dictation on any specimen requested by Pathologist. 7. Assist Pathologist during gross dictation, as well as order appropriate ancillary studies, accurately enter tissue counts, and enter all other instructions in Soft Path Specimen processing work list. 8. Print appropriate logs and labels for daily entries in Soft Path system. 9. Accurately attach CPT code to all out patient specimen. 10. Enter Technical charges using CPT coding into HBOC for each specimen received. 11. Meet courier deadline by completing packaging of all tissue blocks and appropriate paperwork for transportation to Histology lab. 12. Properly decontaminate instruments including cryostat blade. 13. Accurately assess body fluids and perform appropriate procedure, i.e.: cyto-spin vs. cell block and two prepared smears. 14. Differentiate which cytology specimens require which type of preparation. 15. Accurately perform cyto-spin procedure. 16. Accurately perform a cell block using the Histo-gel technique and prepared smears from centrifuged button. 17. Has understanding of centrifuge and cyto-centrifuge equipment. 18. Accurately assist Pathologist with all frozen section and intra-operative evaluation of tissue. 19. Has understanding and is able to accurately perform the following staining procedures: 1)Rapid H&E, 2)Papanicolaou, 3)Wright-Giemsa, 4)Toluidine Blue-O. 20. Performs procedure for filtering and setting up fresh stains: 1)Papanicolaou, 2)Rapid H&E. 21. Accurately file slides, reports and path requisitions. 22. Uses protective clothing and equipment provided in accordance with the AExposure Control Plan@. 23. Understanding of body substance isolation procedures. 24. Satisfactorily completes proficiency testing on the LIS (Laboratory Information System), Soft Path System, and Pathology/Cytology yearly. 25. Maintains Quality Monitors on hospital patient request/specimen error rate, Frozen Sections, TAT, and daily cytology slide count or any other monitor deemed necessary. 26. Print and prepare all Pathology report formats for distribution. 27. Stays up to date on all changes in Medicare Compliance for ABN=s. 28. Accurately give information to patients, physicians and outpatient doctors= offices regarding the collection of specimens in regard to preparation and special procedures in the collection process. 29. Accurately prepare slides, blocks, paperwork and packaging for send-out when additional consultation is requested. 30. Appropriately order any supplies needed as necessary. 31. Must attend all regular Laboratory meetings as well as all scheduled Pathology meetings. 32. Reporting to work on time is required, as is always giving at least two (2) hours notice prior to an unscheduled absence. 33. Knows and practices good principles of confidentiality. Agrees to learn facility=s policy regarding confidentiality and to practice it at all times. 34. Handles the functions of the position with minimal supervision. Will seek direction with requests that are unfamiliar or require greater experience.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: 1. High school diploma or equivalent required. 2. Must have a minimum of three years clinical laboratory experience. 3. State certified Laboratory Assistant license is required or will qualify and apply for a State of Nevada certification as a laboratory assistant after 6 months of employment. 4. Working knowledge of Word, Word Perfect, Quattro Pro and GroupWise. 5. Medical Terminology preferred.
