Job Description

Purpose:

Under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse, physician, or other health care professional, performs a variety of clinical and clerical duties associated with the care of patients in Ambulatory Care Service.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

The Patient Care Associate in the OB/GYN Office Practice is charged with and responsible for:
  1. Maintains compliance with National Patient Safety Goals (NPSG).
  2. Identifies patient utilizing two patient identifiers, name and date of birth, during all encounters with patients, including phlebotomy and other specimen collection.
  3. Communicates issues that may affect patient and staff safety
  4. Complies with infection control practices such as hand washing, proper utilization of PPE, etc.
  5. Takes vital signs, height/weight and head circumference in pediatrics, records results, and reports abnormal findings to licensed professional.
  6. Chaperones provider during physical examination/evaluation of patients
  7. Maintains adequate supplies in unit, including examination rooms
  8. Ensures that supplies are valid and not expired.
  9. Assumes responsibility for the timely transport of specimen to laboratory
  10. Verifies specimen being delivered to the lab with lab personnel and ensures dual signature on specimen logbook.
  11. Assists in the preparation and positioning of patients for examination and procedures.
  12. Performs urine pregnancy test, urine dipstick and blood glucose, as applicable.
  13. Performs EKG, vision and hearing tests, and notifies licensed professionals of abnormal results.
  14. Prepares, labels and collects, various specimens for testing, including phlebotomy.
  15. Performs the necessary clerical duties involved in the process of a patient care visit, including but not limited to appointments, referrals, chart maintenance, and data entry.
  16. Performs the necessary documentation utilizing manual or electronic procedures.
  17. Administers Basic Life Support (BLS) during emergencies.
  18. Escorts and transfers patients to various departments as necessary.
  19. Maintains Infection Control standards to ensure patient/employee safety.
  20. Exhibits courteous and effective communication with all health care team members, patients and families with respect of cultural diversity.
  21. Maintains patient privacy in accordance with HIPAA rules and regulations.


Minimum Qualifications
1. High school diploma or its educational equivalent, approved by a State's Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization; and
2. Successful completion of a NYS Department of Health prescribed training program for Phlebotomy, satisfactory to the Laboratory Director; and
3. Completion of a health care setting-based training program in the performance of electrocardiographs and basic life support procedures including certification in Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation.
Special Note:
In addition to meeting the qualifications above, assignment to a long-term care facility requires a New York State Nurse's Aide Certificate.
