Job Duties

Catawba Hospital has an opportunity for a full-time Patient Engagement Specialist to join our Psychology department. Successful applicant will perform duties including but not limited to:

• Demonstrates effective therapeutic communications and boundaries when interacting with patients, visitors, and staff.
• Collaborates across multiple departments to facilitate optimal communication. Examples: Report and document change in group, 1:1 note in the patient's physical and behavioral status, and other tasks as assigned, to the licensed nurse in a timely and accurate manner.
• Utilizes therapeutic interventions that reflect knowledge of Therapeutic Options (TO), unit routines and rules, and patient treatment guidelines.
• Escorts patients off unit, to engagement activities, or outside of hospital per protocols and procedure or on planned outings.
• Participates in activities that improve patient care, as directed.
• Works with assigned staff for one-on-one patient engagement as indicated.
• Evaluates current patient engagement activities. Tracking attendance and progress toward group and 1:1 objective in PSR progress notes.
• Promotes a culture of therapeutic engagement with a focus on both on-unit and off unit involvement.
• Takes a lead role in conducting community meeting weekly with guest/ topics.
• Posts and maintains monthly unit activity calendar by no later than the last day of the month on assigned unit as assigned.
• Collaboratively design Therapeutic Engagement (TE) activities utilizing SAMHSA's 10 components of Recovery.
• Attends treatment team on assigned unit as requested by teams.
• Follows the established approved daily scheduled assignments in timely manner. Discuss changes with supervisor prior to making any last-minute changes.
• Accurately completes required documentation within established time frames.
• Collaborates with PSR on development of therapeutic activities schedules and programming.
• Other duties as assigned by supervising staff.
• Attends all mandatory in services.
• Completes five hours of in-service to meet learning needs and developmental plan with a focus on patient engagement and group leadership.
• Shares knowledge and skills with other staff members as appropriate.

Minimum Qualifications

Ability to provide direct patient observation and engagement under supervision of licensed/certified staff; ability to follow instructions and report observations of bio-psychosocial needs and behaviors to licensed nurse in timely manner. Assist in planning and implement therapeutic engagement (TE) activities utilizing the 10 components of recovery.

Additional Considerations

Ability to read, write, and comprehend instructions. Ability to demonstrate patience and empathy when providing services to patients. Previous experience in a mental healthcare setting is also preferred.
