Job Description

Purpose of Position:

Under direction, serves as a representative of the healthcare setting administration, providing accurate and complete interpretation of medical and general information between staff, patients and their families. Candidates adhere to the standards of practice and code of ethics of medical Interpreting, ensures optimal utilization of resources and compliance with applicable local, state, and federal rules and regulations.

Responsibilities:
  1. Familiarize patients, family members, caregivers and/or visitors with the purpose and policies of the health care setting and the patient representative program.
  2. Conduct medical and general interpretations for staff, LEP patients, and their families.
  3. Communicate as clearly for both the LEP patient and/or family member and the medical provider.
  4. Relay information in an accurate and concise manner and does not omit, change, or add information.
  5. Understand a variety of regional accents and linguistic styles for target language.
  6. Assess and monitor patients' understanding of information conveyed.
  7. Effectively identify cultural differences as potential communication barriers that could interfere with the exchange of information between providers, patients and their families.
  8. Record and monitor interpretation activities according to hospital and department standards.
  9. Effectively communicate and demonstrate the System's acknowledgement and awareness of diverse health-related needs and concerns to patients, family members, caregivers, staff, and the community.
  10. Assure appropriate and timely responsiveness of the health care setting in meeting patient needs.
  11. Adjust to changing situations and work assignments.
  12. Understand and abide by health center's policies on patient confidentiality, informed consent, non-discrimination and by interpreter's code of ethics and standards of practice.
  13. Comply with policies and procedures concerning infection control and safety in order to maintain a safe and comfortable environment for patients, visitors, and staff.
  14. Perform other duties as required.


Minimum Qualifications
1. Master's degree from an accredited college or university in Public Health, Public Administration, Hospital Administration, Business Administration or in a health care specialization or related discipline; or
2. Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in fields, as described in "1" above or in social sciences; and one (1) year of paid, full-time responsible experience in an administrative,
supervisory or consultative capacity performing functions related to the coordination and delivery of patient care services or similar functions in a hospital or a health care setting; or
3. A satisfactory equivalent of education, training and/or experience.
