Unit Description:

  • Since opening our doors in 1908, AdventHealth has offered one of the most comprehensive children's health programs in Central Florida. Today, we continue this legacy of pediatric excellence at the Magnet® recognized Walt Disney Pavilion at AdventHealth for Children.


  • Our campus is home to 30 pediatric sub-specialties led by a team of 400+ nurses and physicians. We provide specialized care in various state-of-the-art settings, including aNeonatal Intensive Care Unit with private family-centered rooms, an Advanced Center for Pediatric Surgery handling nearly 4,000 cases each year, and one of the few pediatric oncology programs in the area.


  • We're also Central Florida's only pediatric provider for bone marrow transplant, kidney transplant, Gamma Knife services, trilogy radiation and Level I V epilepsy care. But perhaps most exciting of all, is that this is the first-and only-hospital to bear the Disney® name.


  • 56-bed Peds Med Surg department . Average Nurse to Patient Ratio is 4:1, can vary sometimes 3-5, routine and specialty surgery peds patients, respiratory illness patients, fractures, bariatrics

The role you'll contribute:

Practices in accordance with philosophy, policies, procedures and standards of AdventHealth for Children; functions within the guidelines of the protocols for the transport program that are reviewed and agreed upon by the Neonatal and Pediatric Medical Director and Transport Manager Functions include the identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation of emergency care for acutely ill neonatal and pediatric patients in collaboration with the Medical team for the receiving neonatal or pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.

• Obtains or delegates the obtaining of a nursing history. Evaluates for age-appropriate behavior, motor skills and physiological norms of the patient. Completes the admission assessment, including pain screening. Assesses for signs of abuse or neglect.

• Practices autonomously in accordance with professional nursing standards. Utilizes the ability to assess, interpret and report diagnostic data relative to patient age and condition. Identifies the need for patient teaching and is responsible for utilizing each opportunity for teaching patients and families on a planned or spontaneous basis.

• Identifies individualized plan of care. Serves in a leadership role in collaborating and coordinating patient care activities among the interdisciplinary patient-care team. Identifies needs and develops/ modifies plan of care. Interprets and verifies physician orders correctly. Evaluates patients' developmental levels, identifies increased physical/emotional dependency needs and evaluates availability of support system consistent with the age of the patient served.

• Performs treatments and administers medications according to policies and procedures. Functions appropriately in clinical emergencies. Follows Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) isolation guidelines, appropriately uses PPE, performs hand washing according to policy and enforces safety regulations

• Completes all follow-up assessments and evaluations. Evaluates effectiveness of interventions and medications. Investigates questionable situations.

• Participates in quality and performance improvement activities with the goal to improve patient outcomes. Utilizes research and evidence-based practice to improve patient care and nursing practice. Completes accurate documentation within the timeframe set by unit policy and monitoring of activities as needed. Participates in unit/service line budgeting processes to ensure a cost- effective, quality-focused environment.Supports quality standards and initiatives set by the department.

• Exhibits desire to learn and upgrade nursing skills. Serves in a teaching role for peers.Performs other duties as assigned or directed to ensure the smooth operation of both the department and the Children's Hospital.

• Successfully completes appropriate transport training regimen as directed by the Departments of Flight Medicine and/or Respiratory Care; proficiently completes the requisite number of supervised orientation transports.

• Provides 15-minute response time for all transports providing a safe and stable transport for patients.

• Ensures transport supplies and equipment are restocked and functional.

• May perform waived and/or non-waived Point of Care Testing. If performing non-waived Point of Care Testing, as defined in AHCA rule 59A-7.034, must have approved competency and documented proof (copy of either diploma or transcript, at the highest level of academic achievement) at the time of AdventHealth non-waived Point of Care training.

• Attends annual Flight Safety lecture.

• Responsibilities include:

• Conduct monthly Pediatric Safety Assessments at Network ED's.

• Serves as an instructor for the Pediatric CORE and Simlab Class.

• Attend/sponsor community events to for AdventHealth for Children.

• Provide onsite support and resource for our Network Pediatric EDS and new AdventHealth ED's providing Pediatric care.

• Provide Pediatric education and Simulation for AdventHealth EMS and County EMS teams.

• Performing necessary diagnostic and therapeutic procedures as indicated for identification and management of problems, including, but not limited to:

Umbilical line placement, peripheral or central venous access, peripheral arterial blood gas collection, endotracheal tube and laryngeal mask airway (LMA) placement, needle thoracentesis, chest tube placement, interpretation of laboratory and radiographic data, and intraosseous needle insertion.

• Providing family-centered care, including psychosocial support, education, and transfer planning in conjunction with referral staff.

• Maintaining effective communication with referral staff and families.

• Participating in educating staff from referring facilities through informal teaching and planned educational classes and/or conferences.

• Initiating and participating in educational, research, professional and organizational activities that contribute to improving patient care, the Transport program operation, and the individual's own professional development.

• Practicing in accordance with the Florida State Nurse Practice Act, professional nursing standards and the American Nurses Association's Code of Ethics for Nurses.

• Maintaining a flexible schedule to meet department needs.

Qualifications
What Will You Need:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED :
  • A minimum of 2,000 hours of combined Pediatric or Pediatric Emergency Department nursing experience.
  • Ability to effectively deliver patient care while in transport via the confined spaces and unique environment of motor vehicle and rotor wing aircraft

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE PREFERRED :
  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN)


LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRATION REQUIRED :
  • Current valid State of Florida or multi state license as a Registered Nurse
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Current Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification
  • Current Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification
  • Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification
