Baylor College of Medicine and Department Summary:

Texas Children's Hospital is a state-of-the-art 800 bed facility which houses 6 high acuity operating rooms and 4 Pediatric Subspecialty Intensive Care Units (84 rooms) including a dedicated ICU for liver transplant care. TCH receives 1600 outpatient hepatology referrals per year and has been the highest volume pediatric transplant program in the U.S. in the last 4 out of 5 years, with 35 children undergoing liver transplant in 2022. The Division of Pediatric GHN consists of more than 30 MD/DO faculty, 12 GHN fellows and 1 transplant hepatology fellow. The recruited faculty would join a highly collaborative group of 9 pediatric hepatologists with diverse areas of liver expertise. Transplant hepatology is well supported by 5 transplant coordinators, 2 clinical support coordinators, a transplant referral specialist, nursing manager, dedicated quality improvement and compliance team and transplant administrator. Our center is a member of both the Society of Pediatric Liver Transplantation (SPLIT) and The Starzl Network, and our program features a robust liver research portfolio with plenty of opportunities to engage in NIH and Foundation sponsored investigator-initiated studies, multi-center consortia (Children, CFLD, NASH CRN, PALF-IRN, iMALT), and numerous industries sponsored clinical trials.

Inpatient transplant hepatology care at TCH is multi-faceted and consists of a dedicated Liver Intensive Care Unit (LICU) team of pediatric intensivists, transplant surgery, transplant ID, and transplant-specific ancillary services. Other integral members of liver transplant care include transfusion medicine, interventional radiology, transplant immunology and the extracorporeal team (MARS, CRRT, and pheresis). Inpatient weeks on the hepatology service will be shared among 9 faculty and a portion of clinical time will be devoted to the recently established Hepatology Intensive Care Unit (HICU).
