SUMMARY

Under the direct supervision of the TRIO, Upward Bound Director the Peer Advisor (PA) plays a crucial role in the Upward Bound student services by performing a wide variety of tasks that support the department's mission.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Provide exceptional customer service while acting as the first point of contact for Upward Bound Program student services.
  2. Answer incoming telephone calls, online chats and in person inquiries from students, parents, and members of the campus community
  3. Act as a paraprofessional during New Student Welcome, interacting with new students and family members during presentations and workshops as well as individually.
  4. Teach students how to navigate resources and services, one-on-one and during group workshop.
  5. Participate in informational panels and presentations on advising issues and services
  6. Serve on a student advisory board and recruitment board (participating in advisor interviews)
  7. Facilitate workshops to help students explore majors, registration help, etc.
  8. Assist with Upward Bound quarterly newsletters and announcements
  9. Make copies, file, send/sort mail and email, and assist with large mailings, upload student information in student data software.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the essential duties and responsibilities listed above. The qualifications listed below are representative of the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required.

EDUCATION

High school diploma or equivalent required. Associate's degree preferred.

EXPERIENCE

Two (2) general office experience required, three (3) years preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  1. Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred;
  2. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications;
  3. Good oral and written communication skills;
  4. Positive attitude and energy
  5. Ability to meet deadlines and work independently; and
  6. Ability to value and communicate/work with a variety of personality types
  7. Ability to lead and follow directions
  8. Effective interpersonal and small-group communication skills
  9. Ability to work as an effective and productive team member
  10. Ability to lead and follow directions
  11. Must be able to work daily during the between 8 to 19.5 hours each week
  12. Occasional weekend or evening will be required during the academic year
