Brigham and Women's Harbor Medical Associates, a member of Mass General Brigham Medical Group, is a multispecialty, primary care practice with more than 65 physicians. As a Medical Technologist, you will play a vital role in our laboratory by conducting a wide range of tests and procedures on blood and clinical specimens. Your responsibilities will include specimen processing, test performance, and accurate reporting of test results. You will maintain records of patient test results, adhere to our quality control policies, and document all quality control activities. Additionally, you will be responsible for identifying and resolving any issues that may affect test performance or the reporting of results.

To excel in this role, you must have proven experience in conducting routine and high complexity laboratory tests. You should be highly knowledgeable in reading and interpreting test results used by physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Additionally, you must possess excellent organizational skills, work efficiently, and demonstrate a commitment to accuracy and precision in your work.

Responsibilities as outlined by CLIA:

  • Follow the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting, and maintaining records of patient test results.
  • Maintain records that demonstrate proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
  • Adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and maintenance performed.
  • Follow the laboratory's established policies and procedures when test systems are not within acceptable levels of performance.
  • Identify and address problems that may affect test performance or reporting of results, either by correcting them or immediately notifying the appropriate supervisor.
  • Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from performance specifications.
  • Perform high complexity testing only under the direct supervision of a qualified supervisor.


Under the direction of the Technical Director and Clinical Supervisor, you will also be responsible for routine maintenance on equipment, preparation of samples and reagents, and keeping accurate records of quality control and maintenance. Additionally, you will communicate with hospital personnel, participate in proficiency testing programs, and stay updated on the latest developments in technical instrumentation and analytical techniques in Clinical Hematology.

Qualifications

  1. Must possess a minimum of a Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Technology or Chemical, Physical, or biological science from an accredited college or university, OR
  2. Meets other qualifications as described in the Federal Register, 42 CFR, Subpart M 493.1403 - 1495.
  3. ASCP certification or equivalent preferred.


Skills Required:

The knowledge, both practical and theoretical, of tests and procedures necessary to review findings and advise and direct subordinates in action.

  1. The manual/visual dexterity and skills necessary to operate adjust and make repairs to various types of automated and non-automated laboratory equipment.
  2. Must have a comprehensive understanding of laboratory equipment and its operation, maintenance and repair and analytic techniques.
  3. Must have understanding of computer technology and its application to chemical analytical procedures and quality control.
  4. Must have the ability to work independently, evaluate situations and act appropriately. Must be able to remain calm and productive under constant pressure and emergency situations, which produce a high level of stress and mental fatigue.
  5. Must have neat and orderly work habits.
  6. Must have the ability to pay careful attention to detail and to adhere to written protocols.
  7. Must be able to perform as a team member, provide leadership, guidance and direction to staff.
  8. Must be able to remain calm and efficient in stressful situations.
  9. Excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to interact professionally and effectively with numerous staff including physicians, hospital personnel, employees and patients.
  10. Excellent communication skills.
  11. Knowledge of Federal, State, Joint Commission and other regulatory regulations.
