The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) is accepting applications for the position of Performance Dietitian within the UCLA Intercollegiate Athletics Department.

This is a full-time, contract position with a targeted salary range of $64,800 - $72,000/year with full health benefits and membership in the UC Retirement Plan. Under the general supervision of the Director of Performance Nutrition, the Performance Dietitian will assist in the planning, development, implementation, evaluation and management of the performance nutrition services provided to UCLA intercollegiate student-athletes. Primary responsibilities include: Providing individual medical nutrition therapy, team and departmental educational presentations to enhance the performance of competitive collegiate student -athletes to athletes belonging to Intercollegiate Athletic teams. Coordinate nutritional care as a member of multidisciplinary sports medicine/sports science team; Athletic Trainers, Physicians, Athletic Performance Coaches, Coaches, Team Psychologists and other Athletic Department personnel. Address nutrition-related logistical challenges to performance, such as campus dining hall nutrition, hydration, grocery store shopping, as well as nutrition while traveling. Coordinating the performance fueling program with the Food Operations Manager, input on travel snacks, hydration, and meal suggestions. Provide periodical educational cooking classes for student-athletes. Participate in patient care meetings and collaborate with Sports Medicine Staff regarding individual athlete care and health related department programs. Must possess ability to adhere to and comply with Department, University, NCAA and PAC-12 rules and regulations.

All applicants should demonstrate the following abilities:
  • Registered Dietitian through the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR);
  • Minimum of 1 year experience as a Registered Dietitian in the collegiate setting;
  • Demonstrated compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) and ServSafe food service standards;
  • Skill in management, human resources, budget and product partnerships;
  • Skill in providing medical nutrition therapy for individual patients with a spectrum of nutrition concerns utilizing specialized knowledge unique to the sports medicine discipline;
  • Specialized knowledge in addressing concerns of eating disorders and disordered eating in an athletic college-aged population.
  • Ability to document clinical encounters in students' electronic medical record;
  • Skill in developing and planning nutrition care plans for athletes including goals, intervention and instruction.
  • Skill in obtaining body composition measurements and interpretation of the measurement to athletes, athletic trainers and coaches;
  • Knowledge and ability to analyze dietary supplements marketed to athletes, coaches and staff;
  • Ability to be an active participant and providing essential medical information at the Athlete Care Committee addressing needs of high-risk athletes;
  • Ability to analyze high-risk behaviors in an athletic university population.
  • Ability to critically review the professional literature on nutrition education, especially athletic health, disordered eating and sports nutrition;
  • Ability to assess energy availability and provide nutritional counseling; including ability to counsel and refer athletes with high-risk behavior.
  • Specialized knowledge in nutrition promotion and risk reduction in an athletic university population;
  • Strong interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with students, colleagues, professionals, and administrators.
  • Skill at working as part of a team.
  • Excellent group presentation skills to diverse populations;
  • Skill in negotiating ideas, information, and opinions with others to formulate policies and programs and/or arrive jointly at decisions and solutions;
  • Skill at managing shifting priorities and changing pace of workload; including skill at working independently and following through on assignments with minimal direction;
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with culturally diverse students and staff;
  • Knowledge of and ability to follow NCAA rules and regulations;
  • Knowledge of and ability to use various computer programs, email, and the Internet.


Preferred qualifications include:
  • Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD) through the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR);
  • Master's Degree in Nutrition or Exercise Physiology;
  • 2-3 years' experience as a Registered Dietitian in the collegiate or professional setting.
