Education
  • High School Diploma or GED required or
  • equivalent required
Experience
  • 1-2 years 2 years pharmacy technician experience in a retail setting or equivalent training required and
  • 1-2 years Inventory experience in a pharmacy retail setting required
Licenses and Certifications
  • PTCB (Pharmacy Technician Certification Board) certification required or
  • the ExCPT (Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians) required and
  • Pharmacy technician licensure or registration as required by the state where the pharmacy is located required

  • Organizes prescription orders on the counter in order of priority; retrieves labels from the printer; arranges paperwork, labels, monographs, and bags; uses appropriate stamps and notes; and, retrieves stock from the shelf.
  • Performs daily inventory management tasks including; receiving and putting the order away, handling issues pertaining to out of stock/backordered medications, putting together and filling owes, sending drug order and analyzing drug pricing, and fixing inventory count discrepancies in the pharmacy system.
  • Performs phone and face-to-face customer service functions such as: greeting customers, taking in refill requests, new prescriptions, patient demographics and insurance information; calls doctors for refill authorizations and pre-authorizations. Troubleshoots patients' questions and concerns.
  • Performs weekly and monthly inventory management tasks including; running transfer reports, transferring drugs to and from other stores, working the negative drug and the 100 day reports, processing vendor returns, performing cycle counts, pulling expired drugs from the shelf, and any other duties pertaining to maintenance of the pharmacy inventory.
  • Prepares prescriptions for dispensing; counts and verifies medication, labels vials appropriately, and reshelves drugs.
  • Processes cash, check, credit card, and payroll deduction transactions; secures appropriate signatures; ensures compliance with HIPAA requirements; prepares delivery tickets; reconciles delivery transactions; performs end of day register procedures; runs daily cash report and completes deposits as assigned.
  • Processes refills, and performs data entry of new prescriptions including demographics, insurance plans, and prescription information under the supervision of a pharmacist and according to policy; brings to the attention of a pharmacist any claims requiring overrides or interventions; troubleshoots insurance claim rejects; and, follows up on problem prescriptions.
  • Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts. Participates in multi-disciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
