The role you'll contribute:

The pharmacy technician performs a wide range of supportive duties to assist the pharmacist in preparing and dispensing medications so that patients will receive care consistent with the philosophy, goals, policies and procedures of the AdventHealth Outpatient Pharmacy. Technician will perform all required duties/tasks necessary to provide for the effective daily operations of all department services and programs. Technician should be able to handle a high volume of work with minimal direct supervision and perform all job functions. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all. Ability to perform all duties listed for Pharmacy Technician II, III and IV.

  • Prescription processing: follow a systematic procedure for assisting with the flow of prescriptions through the pharmacy. Obtain patient information required for processing of all prescriptions. Obtain insurance information from patient and keep patient abreast of any insurance problems. Maintain current patient information in pharmacy management software. Assure that patient has signed HIPAA release. Keep pharmacist aware of patient status and need for prescription check. Assure orders are processed, dispensed and delivered accurately and promptly. Always obtain pharmacists' verification before distribution of any medication.
  • Prescription preparation: follows strict guidelines in preparing and dispensing medications under the immediate supervision of a pharmacist. Assist pharmacist with all duties of preparing and dispensing of medication accurately and efficiently. Prepare various compounds using aseptic technique under the immediate supervision of a pharmacist. Prepare and label prescriptions for the pharmacist before dispensing. Obtain controlled substances for prescription filling under the immediate supervision of a pharmacist. Double-count schedule II-controlled substances before verification by a pharmacist. Organize all dispensing materials, (i.e. stock container, original prescription(s), labeling, etc.), for final verification by a pharmacist. Demonstrate knowledge of the generic names of medications, medication uses, and a good understanding of mathematical principles.
  • Communication: communicate with patients and other pharmacies regarding prescription transfers or clarification. Answer phone calls and determine nature of request. Respond to requests to determine appropriate action required to meet patient needs. Respond to needs of patients, physicians, and other healthcare practitioners regarding status of prescriptions and deliveries. Promptly inform patients, caregiver, and/or clinical team of any potential problems that may delay or prevent the timely processing and delivery of medications to patients. Communicate with CPO utilizing most efficient mode of communication regarding prescriptions that require prior authorization, patient assistance or copay assistance and comply with applicable standard operating procedures.
  • Inventory management: maintain adequate current stock of medications. Maintain accuracy in inventory control including, but not limited to perpetual inventory in the pharmacy management system. Coordinate receiving, record keeping, stocking drugs, checking for shorts, discrepancies and outdated and short dated merchandise. Monitor inventory system to insure proper storage conditions for all pharmacy items. Reconcile, receive and approve invoices in the primary wholesaler's order management system, and accurately record invoice amounts on the Drugs Billable Spreadsheet. Check products for expiration date at least monthly and prior to dispensing. When processing or filling a prescription for a product that is out of stock, check pharmacy system for availability at other locations and if not, communicate with inpatient pharmacy to determine availability of needed products. Respond to needs of patient, physician, nurses, and care managers regarding special orders. Adjust inventory stock levels and orders drugs in appropriate amount to replenish stock. Never run out of fast movers (top 50). Daily update inventory received to reflect accurate on hand quantity in the pharmacy management system.
  • Expense management: perform all activities involved in the management of pharmaceutical expenses by reviewing and comparing generic costs, use of correct DAW codes, correct NDC of product in stock, and utilizing patient assistance programs when applicable. Monitor drug margins on all prescriptions processed to identify prescriptions generating negative margins, and promptly inform pharmacy managers of such prescriptions. Seek additional vendors for hard to obtain pharmaceuticals whenever necessary. Identify changes in drug movement patterns to Pharmacist as needed to address issues that may impact inventory.
  • Organization and efficiency of pharmacy: contribute to the organization and efficient operation of the pharmacy. Organize assigned work area by keeping it well stocked with necessary items, and keeping it in an orderly fashion. Contribute potential ideas to improve patient care and department organization. Plan and manage time in order to complete work assignments within a scheduled time frame so that assistance may be given to other team members when needed or as directed. Demonstrate the ability to work effectively under pressure and stress. Carry out special assignments as assigned by the pharmacist. Assist in the training of new pharmacy staff members, interns, residents, and students. Answer physician and staff questions as able or refer to the pharmacist.
  • Clinical Pharmacy Services: Understands thoroughly various prescription benefit plans and commercial payor processes, including Specialty programs and communicates effectively with patient and prescriber regarding prior authorizations, appeals, copayments and limited distribution drugs. Contacts prescribers' office regarding clarification on missing prescription information keeping the patient informed on any delays in processing time. Coordinates Prior Authorizations (PAs) for prescriptions in collaboration with the PA team. Coordinates with purchasing team regarding any special ordering of medication, returns and reverse distribution as necessary.


Qualifications
The expertise and experiences you'll need to succeed:

Required:

  • Competent in medical terminology, medication names and medication use
  • Proficient with prescription-filling software and other computer skills
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Ability to interact professionally with public and other medical staff
  • Knowledge of compounding oral/topical medications
  • Knowledgeable in all the major prescription insurance carrier reimbursement guidelines and eligibility for coverage by third-party payers
  • Knowledge of Federal and State laws governing the practice of pharmacy and delegation of responsibilities including which tasks may only be performed by a licensed Pharmacist
  • Moderate proficiency in MS Office: Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • High School graduate or G.E.D. certification.
  • 3+ years of pharmacy technician experience, in a retail pharmacy, mail-order pharmacy, central fill or hospital setting
  • Florida Board of Pharmacy Registered Pharmacy Technician (RPT) license; must complete state required continuing education requirements
  • PTCB- National Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT); must complete national required continuing education requirements


Preferred:

  • Ability to teach pharmacy technicians
  • Prior experience processing and filling prescriptions
  • Previous experience in a managed healthcare organization, medical insurance company, pharmacy benefit management or other healthcare related entity.
  • Retail Pharmacy experience, at least 5 to 7 years
  • Associate degree in physical science, business or healthcare related field
