Job Description

Purpose of Position: Under direct supervision of registered pharmacist, pharmacy technicians will assist pharmacists in preparation, distribution of medications and maintaining drug inventory. Adheres to Federal state and local laws and other regulatory requirements regarding pharmacy and institutional practice. Performs related work rotating between satellites, tours and shifts.

Roles and responsibilities:
  • Under pharmacist supervision, will rotate assignments, and tours to meet departmental needs.
  • Ability to perform work accurately with attention to detail within specified time period.
  • Able to communicate effectively (orally and in writing).
  • Receive, return and deliver medications, medication carts, and supplies to various hospital areas.
  • Operate equipment properly. Troubleshoots automated dispensing systems as needed.
  • Prepackage medications in appropriate containers for dispensing.
  • Prepares non-patient specific batches of IV solutions in accordance with USP guidelines and procedures as outlined in Part 29.7 of the Pharmacy Handbook.
  • Receives prescriptions, types prescription labels and affixes labels on containers.
  • Collect payment in accordance with New York City Health + Hospitals policies.
  • Conduct nursing unit, outpatient clinic, and pharmacy area inspections. Assist with institutional and departmental regulatory surveys as needed.
  • Keys in and retrieves prescription data for review by a pharmacist.
  • Utilizes outpatient and inpatient computerized systems to enter and access patient care information.
  • Able to receive and charge-out medications from stock room, including stocking shelves and rotating stock.
  • Maintains and retrieves pharmacy records using automated and/or manual systems.
  • Obtains drugs from stock and returns them to stock.
  • Peforms pharmacy related clerical tasks.


Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent. College courses desirable but not required.
  • Certification of Pharmacy Technician certification Board (PTCB).
  • Registered with NYSED
