Elmhurst Hospital Center (EHC) is the major tertiary care provider in the borough of Queens. Job Description

Under the direct supervision of a licensed Pharmacist, performs work of a pharmacy technician, in accordance with Article 137 of the Education Law, specifically Article137-A, which details the tasks permitted for a licensed pharmacy technician and an unlicensed pharmacy technician. Ensures patient safety, optimal utilization of resources, service delivery and compliance with NYC Health + Hospitals, health care setting, and all other relevant regulatory policies and standards of care to improve outcomes and patient experience.

Duties & Responsibilities
1. Validates patient identity and screens prescriptions for completeness, formulary/restriction and payment status, prior to processing.
2. Receives written or electronically transmitted prescriptions, types prescription labels and affixes labels on containers.
3. Accurately keys and retrieves prescription data from a computer-generated file for review by a pharmacist.
4. Obtains drugs from stock and returns them to stock.
5. Restocks automated dispensing cabinets.
6. Gets prescription files and other manual records from storage and locates prescriptions.
7. Counts dosage units of drugs and places unit doses in appropriate containers for dispensing.
8. Prepares manual records of dispensing for the signature or initials of the pharmacist.
9. Handles or delivers completed prescriptions to the patient or the person authorized to act on behalf of the patient and advises of the availability of counseling to be conducted by the licensed pharmacist or pharmacy intern.
10. Obtains data for determining prescription cost and coverage.
11. Performs pharmacy-related clerical duties.
12. Attends and/or participates in staff departmental and interdisciplinary meetings and training, as required.
13. Performs other related functions, as directed by the pharmacist.

Effective April 25, 2021, only those who are licensed to practice as a Registered Pharmacy Technician by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) may perform the following functions:
1. Assists the Pharmacist, as directed, in compounding ("compounding" means the combining, admixing, mixing, diluting, pooling, reconstituting, or otherwise altering of a drug or bulk drug substance to create a drug), preparing, labeling or dispensing of compounding drugs used to fill valid prescriptions or medication orders or in compounding, preparing, and labeling in anticipation of a valid prescription or medication order for a patient.

Minimum Qualifications

Effective April 25, 2021, all new hires into the title of Pharmacy Technician must be licensed to practice as a Registered Pharmacy Technician by the NYSED.
