Job Summary:

The purpose of this position is to assist the Administrative Director and the Business Manager for Pharmacy Services with drug procurement, day to day control and development and implementation of cost containment medication programs for the Department of Pharmacy Services. This position provides services to and demonstrates the knowledge and ability to meet the specific needs of our patients. This position must demonstrate a commitment of quality service to our patients, the public and our co-workers.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
  • Participates actively with the Administrative Director and the Business Manager to develop, compile, prepare, analyze and document pertinent data and other information related to CQVA.
  • Maintains drug inventory at a level adequate enough to prevent stock-outs without overbuying and establishes par levels based on available data.
  • Orders/returns all drugs (both oral and parenteral) and supplies that are not maintained by Materials Management, for the Department based on established par levels, in order to maintain a sufficient inventory of drugs at all times.
  • Reviews, verifies, and documents all prime vendor and non-prime vendor purchases. Reviews, processes, documents, and reconciles all medications borrowed or loaned from/to private practices and other independent entities related to Mary Washington Healthcare (i.e. Wound Center) and all non Mary Washington Healthcare entities.
  • Responsible for transmitting a daily order to designated wholesaler.
  • Conducts the Department's purchasing operations to ensure that: all drugs are purchased with compliance to established contract prices; the Department orders the most cost-effective drugs that are available;the Department's progress in meeting its financial objectives is documented; and the Department maintains 95% contract compliance percentage and ensure that the best possible prices are being obtained.
  • Ensures all drug supplies and related items are distributed, stored or shelved in a timely manner after receipt in Pharmacy
  • Ensures that expired/damaged drugs and supplies are removed from inventory in a timely manner and stored in a separate area of the Pharmacy.
  • Maintains and documents returns for expired medications.
  • Ensures that all areas where drug inventories are stored within the Department are maintained in a clean, well organized manner, and appropriately labeled.
  • Maintains and documents up-to-date lists for FDA recalled medications and drug shortages/outages.
  • Keeps the staff and other healthcare providers informed of inventory issues affected by allocations, backorders and recalls.
  • Inform the Administrative/Clinical Directors of Pharmacy of inventory concerns that should be reported to the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.
  • Reviews hospital floor stock requisitions to ensure that all stock items distributed by the Department are properly ordered, charged and billed using computerized systems (e.g., inter-departmental billing).
  • Obtains data and creates monthly reports for the Department in collaboration with the business manager. (Reviews the following daily reports (e.g., Nursing Bad Scan Reports, Respiratory Bad Scan Repots, Unidentified Product Scans) and makes the necessary corrections or adjustments to our Department's barcode tracking system.
  • Ensures that all pharmaceuticals stocked by the Department are cross-referenced correctly.
  • Collaborates with McKesson to maintain optimal performance for the Robotic Equipment and the Prepackaging Process in collaboration with the Automation Technician.
  • Performs monthly updates of the Charge Drug Master to ensure the accurate billing of pharmaceuticals dispensed by the Department.
  • Maintains and accurately updates all drug inventory documents and related files that are held by the Department, in accordance with the licensing requirements established by the Federal Government and the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Functions and completes any and all responsibilities normally assigned to technicians working in the Department of Pharmacy Services.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB)certification required
  • Virginia Board of Pharmacy -Certified Pharmacy Technician.certification required.
  • Two years previous work experience in a hospital pharmacy setting.
  • Demonstrated skills in the development and implementation of projects.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Basic understanding of drug names, dosage forms.
  • General knowledge of hospital and pharmacy operations.
  • Ability to work with computer systems that involve word processing and spread sheet programs.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
