Job Description Summary
The Technician V is a lead technician with supervisory functions. They will perform duties of a Registered Technician under the direction of a supervising pharmacist to support daily pharmacy operations. This position performs routine and clerical function for drug distribution to patients, can perform independently within their scope of responsibility, and will supervise team members, processes and operations.

Job Description

20% - Routine Pharmacy Technician Duties per Tech IV job responsibilities
  • Dose/Order Preparation Operations
  • Compound Sterile Preparations, if applicable

50% - Supervisory Functions of Operations
  • Performs supervisory functions.
    • Provides immediate and direct supervision of supportive personnel assigned to his/her area and participates in the annual performance review process for these staff members.
    • Intervenes to handle difficult, tense, or complex situations when appropriate, confronts/advises personnel when appropriate, and notifies manager when appropriate.
    • Takes responsibility for conduct and success of shift and staff assigned. Gives report and pass off any important and relevant information to oncoming shift.
  • Serves as the liaison between the various service lines and the and the Pharmacy ICCE.
  • Enforces departmental policies and procedures and ensures compliance with pertinent state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Recruits, hires, coordinates training, timely evaluates, promotes development, and disciplines staff.Makes effective recommendation for promotion, demotion, and termination. Responds to employee grievances according to established grievance procedures.
  • Ensures staff members are trained and able to demonstrate the knowledge and skill necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient served in their assigned area.
  • Develops, coordinates and monitors drug distribution systems to the area(s) served.
  • Develops, evaluates, and revises departmental policies and procedures when required.
  • Ensures satisfactory relationships with other departments.
  • Facilitates solutions to problems and resolves complaints regarding departmental services and activities.
  • Conducts regular staff meetings and routinely meets individually with staff to review performance, solve problems, and promote efficiency.
  • Coordinates staff schedules and daily work schedules of assigned personnel. Responsible for payroll system for assigned subordinates.
  • Sets example for other technicians in work quality, efficiency, productivity, and personal conduct standards.
  • Participates on departmental and medical center committees.
  • Augment the professional growth and staff development.
  • Actively participates in process improvement and quality related initiatives within the department and organization.
  • Coordinates efforts to ensure adequate staffing during expected and unexpected system downtimes or emergency operations.
  • Attends, coordinates and/or disseminates information from required in-services & meetings, including Pharmacy ICCE Staff meetings, Pharmacy operations, etc.
  • Staff areas of responsibility as needed
  • Perform other duties assigned

30% - Staff Development, Education and Training
  • Provide general and patient specific drug information as required to health care professionals or patient. This service may take the form of development of teaching aids, formal presentations, and discharge medication counseling.
  • Provides physicians, nursing, or pharmacy in-service education when needed or requested.
  • Participates in the education activities of the department and shows evidence of such (i.e., written contributions to department publications).
  • Precepts pharmacy and pharmacy technician students and/or residents during rotations.
  • Coordinates the orientation and training of new employees, supportive personnel, residents, and students.


Additional Job Description
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
  • Licensure: Current registration as a Pharmacy Technician by the South Carolina Board of Pharmacy (SCBOP), Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (Except). Failure to maintain certification will result in disciplinary action up to and including termination. Advanced certification: SC Board of Pharmacy State Certification or other area-specific advanced certification from an approved provider (e.g. ASHP, PTCB).
  • Minimum experience: 3 years preferred.
