Job Description

Position Summary:
The Phlebotomist I at MUSC is responsible for efficiently and compassionately collecting blood specimens from patients in various clinical settings. This role requires attention to detail, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to patient care and safety.

Key Responsibilities:
1. Perform venipuncture and capillary puncture to collect blood specimens from patients according to established protocols.
2. Verify patient identity and ensure accurate labeling of all specimens collected.
3. Maintain proper documentation of specimen collection, including requisition forms and patient records.
4. Transport specimens to the laboratory in a timely manner, ensuring proper handling and storage to maintain specimen integrity.
5. Provide clear instructions to patients regarding specimen collection procedures and post-collection care.
6. Collaborate with healthcare providers to ensure that all necessary specimens are collected and delivered for testing.
7. Adhere to infection control protocols and safety procedures to minimize the risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens.
8. Maintain a clean and organized work area, including disinfection of phlebotomy equipment and disposal of biohazardous materials.
9. Participate in training and continuing education programs to stay updated on phlebotomy best practices and regulatory requirements.
10. Assist with other tasks in the laboratory or clinical setting as needed.

Physical Requirements:
1. Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
2. Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination to perform venipuncture and capillary puncture accurately.
3. Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds of laboratory supplies and equipment.
4. Visual acuity and color vision necessary to identify vein locations and assess specimen integrity.
5. Ability to communicate effectively with patients and healthcare team members.
6. Flexibility to work variable shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
7. Stamina to work efficiently in a fast-paced and sometimes stressful environment.

Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Certification as a Phlebotomy Technician (PBT) preferred.
- Previous experience in a healthcare or laboratory setting preferred but not required.
