Collects and processes patient specimens for laboratory testing. Performs special collection and specimen processing procedures.
Education
  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • May require up to 1 year of technical or other specialized training, such as completion of a phlebotomy training program and a specialized training program in fistula/graft draw procedures.
Experience
  • 0 to 6 months experience required
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Requires the ability to read and write; and knowledge of grammar, and arithmetic including fractions and decimals.
  • May require the use of standard office/medical equipment (i.e., typewriter, personal computer, data terminal, on-line printer, calculator, telephone, facsimile, copier, sterilizing equipment, blood pressure cuff, or tables); the preparation, comparison or checking of reports, records and related data; and basic use of formulas, charts, tables, drawings and knowledge of their application.
  • Greets patients, verifies patient identity, and collects blood specimens using a variety of routine phlebotomy techniques (i.e. venipuncture, heelsticks, fingerstick). Takes all measures to assure patient safety, comfort and satisfaction with the procedure.
  • Assures the integrity of blood specimens for laboratory testing through accurate selection of collection tubes and correct technique; demonstrates good judgement in the selection of the collection procedure/site; assures timely and accurate collection and delivery of blood specimens.
  • Receives specimens and inputs test requests into Cerner based on Invision or physician orders; centrifuges and processes specimens as required. Draws and processes managed care samples according to department protocol
  • Performs special draws from fistulas and grafts as assigned; follows special collection protocol for glucose tolerance tests as assigned.
  • Follows all phlebotomy and department policies and procedures; documents phebotomy and specimen processing procedures and quality assurance problems according to department protocol.
