Summary

This PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT is located in the Medical Group at an Air National Guard Wingand is part of the CA 144 FW.

This position is concurrently announced with VA 24-456 NURSING (PRACTITIONER) and VA 24-462 PHYSICIAN. Only one of the announced positions will be filled.

Duties

THIS IS A T5 EXCEPTED SERVICE, PERMANENT POSITION

The primary purpose of the PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT, GS-0603-12, is to provide a fulltime, experienced Physician Assistant / Nursing (Practitioner) to support the planning, scheduling, execution, management, and administration of installation-wide medical management including, aerospace and operational disposition and clinical judgment for medical case management to promote and maintain the health and well-being of assigned Air National Guard (ANG) personnel.

  • Coordinates with inter-disciplinary teams to gather facts and uses effective analytical and evaluative methods to prepare healthcare recommendations of an advanced nature and considerable difficulty level. Utilizes knowledge of military medical organizational structure, policies and procedures to independently review records/referrals and recommend appropriate aeromedical and operational dispositions online of duty and medical continuation determinations; separation history and physical exams; incapacitation pay; convalescent leave; and the need for disability evaluation system processing.
  • Uses clinical skills and knowledge to complete comprehensive medical and physical assessments, and preventative medical services for assigned ANG personnel. Provides sound medical advice/guidance for safety investigations and compiles a clinically relevant medical summary and/or relevant medical records for the safety investigation officer. Evaluates adherence to medical care plans, supporting implementation and compliance through professional knowledge of and skill in applying medical judgment for the pre- and post-deployment health assessment, human immunodeficiency virus (can be designated HIV provider), personnel reliability, Law Enforcement Officer Safety Act, security clearance; overseas clearance; force health protection; force health readiness; psychological health; occupational and environmental health (i.e., hearing conservation; immunization; fetal, respiratory and radiological protection; ionizing radiation, potable water quality, hazard communication, and quantitative fitness testing) programs.
  • Independently carries out assignments, coordinating with others as necessary and discussing scope of the assignment, approaches, timeframes, and execution phases with leadership; exercising good judgment in accordance with the methods and practices of the community health nursing and established medical/administrative policies affecting ANG readiness. Provides a wide range of policy guidance and medical interpretations to senior management officials to ensure compliance with medical aspects for the worldwide deployability of assigned ANG personnel.
  • Provides consultation, teaching, and coordination with patients and their family members of treatment and medical care. Develops, coordinates, and provides training and continuing education on infection control and Blood borne Pathogens, Multi Drug Resistance colonization/infection, Tuberculosis and other infectious processes to health care providers, other health care personnel, patients, and families. Reviews audiovisual aids and materials available for infection control to assist in education of clinic personnel as well as patients and families. Selects appropriate materials and/or develops new material as needed. Serves as a competent medical authority when working with Federal, State, and local agencies on matters related to aerospace medicine, preventative medicine, personnel reliability, and occupational medicine.


The position resides within the infrastructure and support functions of the state National Guard; the incumbent is not subject to mobilization, nor is the work described part of the military mission; and the incumbent does not perform a key advisory or essential administrative role that is inherently military. In addition, the position must meet one of the following: It does not have a comparable military function; the position is required in full-time (civilian) role when the organization, or similar military position, is mobilized to perform continuing post-mobilization functions; or the position requires a skill or competency that necessitates technical expertise or professional qualifications that cannot be readily found in the military structure of the state military force.

  • Successful completion of formal education and training as a Physician's Assistant from a program that is recognized by a national professional body.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain privileging for the DOD/AFMS/ANGMS IAW DHA PM 6025-13 Vol 4 and DAFMAN 44-119. Must maintain credentials requirements at all times (i.e. current and unrestricted state license, BLS, clinical competencies, etc.) IAW DHA PM 6025-13 Vol 4 and DAFMAN 44-119.


Qualifications

PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT, GS-0603-12: Must have at least one year of specialized experience, equivalent to at least the GS-11 level, or equivalent pay band in other pay systems in the Federal government. This experience may also have been obtained in the private sector, but must demonstrate that it is comparable to the GS grade indicated. Specialized experience may have been demonstrated by performing duties such as: Using professional knowledge of and skill in applying a wide range of Aerospace, Occupational and Preventative Medicine practices, principles and theories; Providing consultation, teaching, and coordination with patients and their family members of treatment and medical care; Providing analytical, evaluation, monitoring and reporting support on Individual Medical Readiness for ANG Wing, tenants, and geographically separated unit personnel.

Education

Must have completed the education requirements and licensure below:
  1. Graduation from a Physician Assistant educational program accredited by the Accreditation Review Committee on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or educational institution that is accredited by an accrediting body or organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, at the time the degree was obtained.
  2. Completion of the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) examination and currently maintain status as a certified physician assistant, including completion of all requirements for Continuing Medical Education (CMS) and re-certification.
  3. Possess a current, action, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a Physician Assistant from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States
