Job Description
The Inpatient Medicine Physician Assistant (PA) service was created due to increasing admission and the need to alleviate the workload of the house-staff service. The Physician Assistant (PA) Service functions independently from the house-staff services. It is staffed by Physician Assistants with 24/7 PA coverage and attending supervision. The PAs also staff the Short Stay and Observation Unit along with the Alternate Level of Care (ALOC) Service.

Roles and Responsibilities
Perform al duties of a physician assistant on the inpatient medicine service
• Acts as a professional role model to al levels of staff by incorporating expertise and related experience into all aspects of patient care
• Participates in the development and revision of interdisciplinary and hospital standards, patient and family education materials as relevant to area of practice and expertise
• Works collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team including the attending physician to develop and implement the therapeutic plan of care for a group of patients and ensure communication with family members.
• Plans and organizes care to meet individual patient needs and to ensure appropriate clinical resource utilization per protocols, pathways, and other means.
• Assists medical director in identifying and hiring new candidates. It is anticipated that over the next year, the service will be increased by at least 50%. This translates to at least six new physician assistants. As such, recruitment strategy will include attending open houses at PA schools across the tri-state area, taking part on online job fairs frequently, reviewing a wide arrange of CVs and performing initial phone interviews to screen potential applicants
• Alongside the other Co-PA leader, responsible for all aspect of board management - ensuring a staff model that allows the service to serve its mission of admitting patients and that the service is operating at appropriate census.
* Along with the other Co- PA leader, orients, trains, and assigns work to a service of currently 15 PAs. This includes setting up didactic sessions, being available to answer any clinical/system issues.
• Assists the medical director of service with probation and annual review for al PAs as well as discipline matters. This involves both a written evaluation and feedback with each PA individually.
• Responsible for filing in should last minute absences/tardiness occur if no other coverage and be secured.
• Develops and secures approval of protocols, standards, policies and procedures.
• Monitors compliance of established protocols, policies and procedures of the hospital
• Problem resolution: management of conflicts within the group, or involving the PAs and other personnel
• Develops, implements and monitors clinical rotations for al student Physician Assistants rotating on the service.
• Perform evaluations of al student Physician Assistants rotating on the service
Minimum Qualifications
1. Current New York State registration as a Physician Assistant; or
2. Current limited permit issued by New York State to practice as a Physician Assistant.
