Responsibilities

Plan and direct medical policies and programs. Define and achieve financial targets in support

of business goals; evaluate organizational functions and structure to best determine the allocation and utilization of services.

  • Facilitate strategic clinical relationships with physicians. Work with leadership to develop a strategic plan for growth of clinical practice.
  • Ensure that clinical programs are in compliance with governmental and regulatory requirements.
  • Implemens utilization review and quality improvement systems. Implement educational programs and offerings.
  • May provide medical services to patients in an assigned area.
  • Prepare annual operating budget for assigned service areas.
  • Consult with planning and operations leadership in new program development. Supervise any assigned medical/resident programs.
  • Participation and clinical leadership in the development and review of appropriate clinical protocols and the development and oversight of metrics to demonstrate program impact.


Academic Affairs / GME

Leads strategic planning, resource allocation, and the management of academic education, research, related clinical programs and other external affairs.

Serves as Chair in the Department of Clinical Medicine at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC), College of Medicine, and performs duties as outlined in UTHSC Chair, Dept of Clinical Medicine responsibilities .

Builds business in the areas of academic education and research, related clinical programs and other external affairs.

Ensures collaboration across various functional areas. Fosters relationships with external industry sponsors, area hospitals and local universities.

Expands community services to provide cost-effective care to low-income and uninsured residents in the market.

Ensures academic relationships are developed and maintained in the market.

Saint Thomas Research Institute

Leads and responsible for the operational and financial performance of the Saint Thomas Research Institute

Leads the organization's overall research strategy, research education, and performance effectiveness.

Builds and maintains relationships with key stakeholders to advance the goals and objectives of the research program. Engages and coordinates the work of the Institute's medical directors.

Manages the development and offerings of the ongoing education work activities of the organization.

UTHSC Department Chair of Clinical Medicine

General expectations as Chair include duties routinely expected of a Chair. This includes clinical, research and educational administrative and supervisory tasks as well as other duties as assigned by the Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs & GME Nashville Region, College of Medicine UTHSC. Duties, in part, include:

Clinical

  • Serve as a representative of UTHSC in dealings with the hospitals and Saint Thomas Health as It relates to clinical issues
  • Assist, as needed and as appropriate, faculty and Saint Thomas Health in meeting and exceeding clinical metrics


Research

  • Provide guidance and oversight of all research activities in the department
  • Education
  • Work with the UTHSC Office of GME on GME activities in the department
  • Work with the Assistant Dean of UME in Nashville on UME activities


Faculty

  • In conjunction with the Associate Dean, conduct annual reviews of all faculty
  • Direct or participate in new recruits into St Thomas Health that will also be members of the department
  • Establish and maintain a system for faculty development/ improvement as it relates to research, teaching and promotion


Finances/Staff

  • Assumes responsibility for all department finances and oversees staff, with the assistance of the Associate Dean and the Manager of GME





Requirements

Licensure / Certification / Registration:

One or more of the following required:

  • Physician MD/DO credentialed from the Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners obtained prior to hire date or job transfer date.
  • Podiatrist credentialed from the Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners obtained prior to hire date or job transfer date.


Education:

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) or Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) or Doctor of Optometry (OD) or Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) required.
