Job Title - Child Nutrition Program Manager

Supervisor: School Principal, CNP Area Specialist, CNP Supervisor, CNP Director

Job Goals:
  • To provide direction, planning, monitoring, and oversight of local school Child Nutrition Program (CNP).
  • To provide food preparation services for Jefferson County Schools.

Minimum Qualifications:
  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Ability to meet the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification/licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457.
  3. Minimum of one (1) year of experience in nutrition, supervision, training, planning and monitoring of a food service establishment.
  4. Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  5. Knowledge of Child Nutrition Program guidelines and regulations.
  6. Ability to use technology as required to perform job responsibilities.
  7. Ability to supervise, develop and evaluate assigned personnel according to school system procedures.
  8. Ability to demonstrate leadership, organization, collaboration, and planning skills to accomplish school goals and job requirements.
  9. Ability to possess and maintain food safety certification provided by the Jefferson County Health Department and/or the National Restaurant Association.
  10. Possess and maintain all required health certifications including tuberculin skin test results.
  11. Strength, stamina, agility, dexterity, and acuity to perform job responsibilities safely and effectively.
  12. Ability, agility and stamina to engage in prolonged standing, stooping, kneeling, bending, turning, reaching, and repetitive lifting up to 25 pounds.
  13. Ability to lift objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
  14. Ability and willingness to work after hours, weekends, or holidays when necessary.
  15. Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance.
  16. Such alternative qualifications to those listed as the Board may require.


Performance Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
  1. Demonstrates support for the school system, its vision, goals and priorities.
  2. Supervises and assists in preparation and service of food according to the written menu of the day.
  3. Supervises and assists in the storage and care of food.
  4. Assists school CNP staff in promoting the goals and objectives of the school food service program to students, teachers, parents and community members.
  5. Maintains adequate and accurate records and controls including personnel, financial, inventories, operational, and purchasing of food, supplies and equipment.
  6. Cooperates with health officials in supporting all local and state public health laws and codes.
  7. Participates in and promotes in-service training, conferences, and continuing educational programs for self-improvement and for other CNP personnel.
  8. Monitors the cooler and freezer units during school hours and/or during holidays or weekends if directed by a supervisor.
  9. Ensures centralized school system menus are followed.
  10. Observes tray assembly to ensure that foods are properly portioned to meet requirements and that food is attractively arranged on trays.
  11. Posts menus at least one week in advance; adjusts menus to accommodate commodity arrivals and/or vendor shortages as approved by supervisor.
  12. Purchases food and supplies and checks orders and invoices for quality, quantity, accuracy of weight and price upon delivery.
  13. Oversees the locking of the storeroom and secures the cafeteria and work areas before leaving.
  14. Maintains a file of standard recipes and instructs CNP personnel in the use of recipes.
  15. Outlines specific duties and work schedules for school CNP personnel in accordance with school system policies and procedures.
  16. Instructs and supervises employees during work hours.
  17. Cooperates with principal, supervisor and school faculty in planning, developing and utilizing the dining room/cafeteria to provide positive learning experiences for students.
  18. Maintains professional appearance and dress appropriate for school food service program (uniform, hair net/hats, closed-toe shoes with non-skid sole, etc.)
  19. Models and encourages CNP employees to observe high standards of grooming, safety, and effective work habits.
  20. Posts instructions for use of equipment and schedules for the maintenance of CNP equipment.
  21. Develops and maintains a welcoming and positive climate in the cafeteria.
  22. Maintains and enforces standards of cleanliness in the kitchen and dining room areas of the school.
  23. Assists and encourages staff in developing CNP skills.
  24. Uses computer software/technology for CNP operations as assigned.
  25. Attends conferences and training sessions to improve skills and programs.
  26. Demonstrates professional ethics and effective leadership.
  27. Maintains confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters in accordance with state law.
  28. Demonstrates initiative in identifying opportunities for improvement in areas of responsibility.
  29. Responds to inquiries and requests in a timely and positive manner.
  30. Maintains and submits required reports, records, and correspondence in a timely and accurate manner.
  31. Properly cares for equipment and material resources of the school system.
  32. Uses effective collaboration skills to work as an effective team member.
  33. Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local Board policies, and state, federal, and local law.
  34. Reports absences and takes leave in accordance with Board policies and procedures.
  35. Performs other job-related duties as assigned by principal and/or immediate supervisors.

Terms of Employment: As established by the Board and applicable state law.

Evaluation: Performance will be evaluated in accordance with the Board's policy on evaluation of personnel.
