Duties

Performs journeyman level plumbing and related work in the Construction and Maintenance Section. Will be required to make a variety of repairs and maintenance to various utility systems and plumbing fixtures. This may include, but is not limited to, urinals, commodes, vanities, sinks, drain lines, floor drains, floor sinks, gas lines, gas connections, water supply, hot water tanks, boilers, sewer lines, etc. Required to trouble shoot, locate and repair issues such as clogs, leaks, drainage issues, etc.

Measures, cuts, bends, and threads pipe and tile; weld joins for a leak-free join, caulks and seals elbows, union joints, tile pipe, faucets, and shower drains. Removes, cleans, installs or replaces joints and fixtures such as traps, faucets, and unions. Connects equipment to installed system and replaces sections of pipe and tile by following previously used routes, hangers, and levels.

Installs, modifies, and repairs new and existing utility, supply, and disposal systems; locates and taps main lines, sets up systems routes, places and cuts route opening, places hangers for proper level and slope, and installs valves, traps, and unions needed for proper operation of systems. Determines that parts such as pipe, reduction couplings, elbows, traps, and valves are the proper kind and size. Inspects, tests, and makes needed adjustments to systems and equipment for proper operation, flow, drainage, and sanitary conditions after completing the work. Will be required to work with other trades and contractors, coordinating and collaborating for the completion of all work. Operates vehicle when necessary to drive to work site. May be required to travel to Big Bear Recreation Facility to maintain and repair plumbing systems and fixtures.

Provides Customer Service with an emphasis on courtesy. Assists customers and communicates positively in a friendly manner. Acknowledges customers, smiles and makes eye contact. Asks questions to determine, verify and solve problems. Checks for satisfaction on the quality of goods and services. Takes action to solve problems quickly. Alerts the higher-level supervisor or proper point of contact for help when problems arise.

Adheres to safety regulations and standards. Observes required sanitation and hazardous waste disposal rules and regulations. Uses required safety equipment and observes safe work procedures. Promptly reports any observed workplace hazards, and any injury, occupational illness, and/or property damage resulting from workplace mishaps to the immediate supervisor.

Adheres to established standards of actively supporting the principles of the EEO program and prevention of sexual harassment. Performs other related duties as required.

EVALUATIONS:

Qualifications

Skills and Knowledge: Must be a journeyman level plumber. Must be able to perform all phases of work related to plumbing, water and sewage systems. Must be able to install and repair natural gas systems. Must have knowledge of how various supply disposal and utility systems are installed and operate. Must have the ability to plan and lay out the installation and modification of various systems and equipment including angles, arcs, and circles; to interpret and apply building plans, blueprints, and use shop mathematics. Must have skill in the use of any of the accepted trade methods and techniques and in the use of tools and equipment of the plumbing trade. Must be able to install, troubleshoot and repair various systems. Must be maintain a welding certificate. Must possess or be able to obtain applicable government operator permits. Must have a valid driver's license.

Responsibility: After work is assigned, uses personal knowledge to select tools, decide on the method and technique to use, and completes the work with a minimum of supervision. Selects materials and obtains replacement parts by comparison with the part to be replaced or by reference to supply lists and catalogs. Tests the unit or system on completion of the work to ensure equipment is repaired according to requirements.

Physical Effort: May work from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms. May work in hard to reach or confined areas; required to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lift, carry and set up parts and equipment weighing up to 45lbs independently and over 45lbs with assistance.

Working Conditions: Work is performed inside and outside and is usually dirty, dusty, and greasy. May be required to make repairs and installations outside in bad weather. May make repairs in areas where foul odoriferous fumes are present. Exposed to possibility of bone fractures, cuts, scrapes, burns, and infections.
