The Department of Safety and Professional Services mission is to promote economic growth and stability while protecting the citizens of Wisconsin as designated by statute. DSPS and related professional boards protect the citizens of Wisconsin by ensuring the safe and competent practice of licensed professionals; performing inspections of commercial buildings, amusement rides, boilers, elevators, pressurized gas systems, and electrical systems; and performing plan reviews of commercial building, plumbing, fire suppression, elevators, boilers, and private onsite wastewater treatments systems.

What We Are Looking For: A plumbing expert (Plumbing Plan Reviewer) to provide plumbing plan reviews, consultation, and inspection in the Division of Industry Services.

Where We Are Located: This position will be headquartered out of Madison, WI, with the possibility to work remotely at the discretion of the department. This position will service the following counties: Dane County, Jefferson County, Rock County, and Green County.

Please note: This position will require independent statewide travel, sometimes through the use of one's own transportation. Overnight stays may also be required.

Position Summary

This position protects the public health, safety, environment and the water resources of Wisconsin relative to plumbing systems in connection with constructed environments. This position serves as an expert in plumbing system methods, components and in understanding and applying engineering principles/practices to plumbing systems. This position is a deputy of the Department and a licensed master plumber in accordance with s. 145.02, Stats. This position also performs assigned duties that include conducting plan reviews, training, instructing, section staff peer plan review in the disciplines of healthcare, water treatment, water reuse, and stormwater. In addition, this position performs assigned audits, plumbing/pool inspections, and consultations. This position is responsible for writing and enforcing Department orders along with the development and presentation of training, examinations and codes.

Through research and development, this position specializes in areas of drain and vent, drinking water treatment, interceptors and indirect wastes, water reuse, storm, wastewater treatment, water supply, fire protection, cross connection control and the protection of the water supply system. This specialty provides the highest level of working knowledge for the plumbing and public swimming pool construction industries and the State of Wisconsin plumbing and public swimming pool programs. Specific responsibilities include:
  • Examination of plans for compliance with Wisconsin Administrative Code and national standards. Provide expert consultation for petitions for variance.
  • Provide complex and technical plumbing/public swimming pool system consultation to external and internal customers including cross connection control, healthcare, water treatment, water reuse, and stormwater engineering issues embodied in Wisconsin Administrative Code and national standards.
  • Provide technical plumbing/public swimming pool training, and consultation to section staff including cross connection control, healthcare, water treatment, water reuse, and stormwater engineering issues specific to Wisconsin administrative code and national standards.
  • Conduct field inspections and complaint investigations.
  • Prepare and provide specialized training courses for plumbing/public swimming pool system issues, regarding the administration, interpretation and enforcement of Wisconsin Administrative Codes and Statutes.

Salary Information

This position is in schedule-range (insert) with an annual salary of $75,316.80 - $88,129.60 plus a $3.50 hourly add on for holding a Masters Plumber License. A twelve month probationary period is required. Pay for current state employees will be set in accordance with the Wisconsin State Compensation Plan.

A Sign-on Bonus of $2,000 for eligible employees who agree to remain in the position for one year. $1000 will be paid on first paycheck and $1000 will be paid when employee completes one year of service.

Qualifications

Qualified applicants will have:
  • A Master Plumber License
  • A Commercial Plumbing Inspector License or have the ability to obtain it within 6 months of hire

In addition to having all the above, well qualified applicants will have experience with one or more of the following:
  • Experience or training with plumbing plan review
  • Experience or training with plumbing inspections
