Job Duties

Join the Department of Forestry and work with the full spectrum of partners who believe that trees and sustainably managed forests are the answer. Play a key role in ensuring that the trees and forests of Virginia provide the highest level of environmental, economic, and social benefits to all Virginians.

The DOF Policy & Legislative Analyst will work directly with the state forester and agency leadership, overseeing agency efforts throughout the annual state legislation and budget cycle. This newly created position will serve as the agency legislative liaison with members of the General Assembly and staff and will build strong working relationships within the administration and with a wide range of partner organizations. Will also monitor relevant policy issues at the local and national level and provide strategic assessments in support of the agency mission. The Policy & Legislative Analyst will represent the agency on external working groups and advisory panels and will help to lead similar efforts at DOF. This position will assist in developing and updating agency regulations and policies, and in responding to Virginia Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests. Position is located in Charlottesville with frequent travel to Richmond, especially during the GA session.

Minimum Qualifications

Demonstrated experience working through all steps in the Virginia legislative and budgeting process including development of draft legislation and budget amendments, working with General Assembly members, committees, and staff, and collaborating effectively with diverse stakeholders to craft successful outcomes. Experience serving on GA established advisory panels and working groups. Must be able to review, interpret and analyze information from a variety of sources and incorporate multiple perspectives in developing and reviewing proposals. Ability to envision creative solutions while advancing objectives of the agency and the current administration. This professional will have demonstrated communication, organizational, time management, presentation and interpersonal skills. Additionally, candidates will possess a strong business acumen and exemplify our shared code of ethics. Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

Additional Considerations

Experience working in state government, experience working on environmental and natural resources issues. Working knowledge of legislative tracking system(s).
