What You Will Do

The successful candidate will become a member of the Center for National Security and International Studies (CNSIS) and be assigned to the Mission Integration office. This office supports the larger CNSIS mission providing analysis to senior Los Alamos National Laboratory staff on national security issues that impact the Laboratory's mission.

The candidate will assist in research, briefing, and analytical paper development on a wide range of national security issues to include nuclear deterrence, threat reduction and arms control, nuclear security, climate change impacts to national security, artificial intelligence, and related space operations.

  • Assisting in the development of the Weekly Information - News, a CNSIS product highlighting key national security issues regionally and functionally that is distributed to over 1,200 subscribers across the Nuclear Security Enterprise
  • Contribute to Washington DC - based work at key think-tanks like the Atlantic Council and Center for Strategic and International Studies. This includes participating in workshops and conferences as well as assisting with the logistics of these events.
  • Supports and contributes to a range of CNSIS projects including net assessment in direct support of the Deputy Director of Weapons, Strategic Assessment and Systems Analysis effort; organizational as well as substantive support to annual CNSIS sponsored conferences such as Harnessing Transformational Technologies, Strategic Weapons in the 21 st Century, and Wilson Center workshops on arms control.
  • Takes responsibility for understanding tasks and owns contributions to deliverables on multiple projects.
  • Continues to develop expertise and knowledge within the national security policy and technology disciplines and develops new skills in related disciplines.



What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently with initiative.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) with a desire to constantly learn and adapt while working on diversified projects.

Education/Experience: Awarded a B.A. or B.S. in International Studies, Political Science, National Security Studies or a related field completed within the past 3 years with a cumulative GPA of least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. May be accepted/enrolled in a graduate program provided that the program is in a related field.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge/experience analytical and if possible, intelligence briefing and analysis writing
  • Knowledge/understanding of a range of national security issues both regional and functional
  • Familiarity/general understanding of key national security policy and technology issues
  • Familiarity with conflict theory and/or modeling; and other models/concepts including game theory, weighted power, uncertainty quantification, and Bayesian analytical approaches
  • Knowledge/experience with software like Excel, PowerPoint, Word, etc.

Work Location: The work location for this position may be hybrid with some time spent on site at CNSIS offices either in Los Alamos or Santa Fe New Mexico. Some travel to Washington DC may be required . Hybrid is defined as working partially onsite/partially offsite but within 2 hours ground commute of this location. All work locations are at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance Q: ( Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
