The University of Virginia Department of Public Health Sciences in the School of Medicine is seeking highly qualified applicants for a one-yearPostdoctoral Research Associateposition, with the possibility of extension to three years based on an annual basis dependent upon satisfactory performance and the availability of funding. This position is part of the Center for Tobacco Prevention and Control Research , which conducts research to reduce tobacco-related disparities through the development and dissemination of sustainable community-based tobacco prevention and cessation interventions.
The candidate will be asked to support projects related to the development and evaluation of remotely delivered tobacco prevention and control interventions, in particular interventions using mobile technology using a precision health framework. This work will be conducted in Virginia. Mentorship will be provided by Drs. Kara Wiseman and Melissa Little who are collaborators on this work. This position is funded by NIH and internal funding, with a focus on improving outcomes and reducing disparities for communities and populations, specifically reducing cancer risk behaviors. Candidates will receive mentorship and training in decision support to implement tobacco control interventions, and grant writing.
The successful candidate will be expected to:
An earned Ph.D. in a research-oriented field, such as Psychology, Public Health, Research/Statistics/Evaluation, or a related field is required by the start date of the position.

Physical Demands:
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job occasionally requires local and regional travel to attend in-person meetings with research team members, and walking some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
Anticipated Hiring Range:
$55,000- 68,000, commensurate with qualifications.

The successful candidate will be expected to:
- Support the implementation of current trials, which may include research activities related to obtaining, modifying, and continuing institutional review board approval (IRB), developing and refining survey measures, communicating with local partners, supporting data collection including in-person and online survey data.
- Cleaning and analyzing data collected through the implementation of the previous studies involving mobile health smoking cessation and tobacco prevention interventions.
- Support the implementation of tobacco prevention and control interventions delivered through mobile health, including collection of data, and assessment of intervention impact.
- Run advanced quantitative analyses using software such as SAS, R, Mplus, etc.
- Generate research questions for analysis utilizing quantitative data collected from prior trials.
- Lead and co-author papers for submission to peer-reviewed journals.
- Communicate research findings at key conferences (e.g., Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco, American Public Health Association, Society of Behavioral Medicine, etc.).
- Contribute to submission of federal and private grant proposals to funders (current and prior funders include National Institutes of Health, Virginia Foundation for Health Youth, etc.).
- Contribute to the intellectual environment of the Center for Tobacco Prevention and Control Research and Precision Health Initiative by keeping current on recent scientific studies and relevant advanced quantitative methods, and regularly attending and presenting findings at lab meetings.
- Providing near-peer-mentorship to students and other early-career-scholars on the research team.
An earned Ph.D. in a research-oriented field, such as Psychology, Public Health, Research/Statistics/Evaluation, or a related field is required by the start date of the position.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience: The ideal candidate is an early-career researcher with prior experience working with large datasets and cutting-edge statistical methods, and some knowledge or interest in remotely delivered interventions and/or tobacco control and prevention.
- Content expertise in some of the following areas: Tobacco prevention and control, intervention development, implementation, and evaluation, including remotely delivered interventions (e.g., digital, or mobile health).
- Methods expertise in one or more of the following areas: Survey data analysis, conducting applied research in community settings, implementation of randomized controlled trials.
- Administrative expertise: Proficient with Box, Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams), Zoom, Qualtrics or similar survey data collection tools, and ability to learn new software quickly and introduce new useful applications and platforms to the team.
