Postdoctoral Position (Biochemistry and Protein Biophysics)

Richmond, Virginia

Employer: Virginia Jobs
Industry: Department of Chemistry
Salary: Competitive
Job type: Full-Time

Description of the Job:

The Lucas Lab ( https://chemistry.vcu.edu/people/faculty/lucas.html ) within the Department of Chemistry at Virginia Commonwealth University has an NIH-funded postdoctoral position available for an enthusiastic and skilled scientist. Candidates with expertise in the biochemical and biophysical characterization of proteins and those who have a genuine passion for understanding the role of metals in biological systems and processes are encouraged to apply. The principal research focus will be on elucidating the structural features and the biochemical mechanisms of amyloidogenic proteins implicated in Parkinson's disease, with an emphasis on metal-mediated structural dynamics, neurochemistry, and the biochemical and/or redox modification of these aggregation-prone proteins.

Candidates will routinely support the preparation of proteins through cell culture expression (bacterial and mammalian), chromatographic protein purification (FPLC) and separations (gels, blots, etc.), as well as a variety of analytical techniques (fluorescence, LSPR, EPR, CD, multiplexed immunoassays, etc.). Candidates will also have an opportunity to contribute to a comprehensive research project, and individual responsibilities may be dedicated to light scattering techniques (such as SEC-MALS); utilization of advanced imaging platforms (such as TEM); and/or implementation of mammalian cell culture and/or DNA manipulation. The successful candidate will be expected to independently execute and analyze experiments, to contribute to the preparation of manuscripts, and to promote a collegial and rigorous laboratory environment. Periodic technical progress reports will be required, and opportunities to mentor graduate and undergraduate students will be available.

Required Qualifications

Minimum qualifications include a Ph.D. in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biophysics, or a related discipline. The initial appointment is for one year with a review after 6 months; renewal beyond 1 year is contingent on milestones achieved.

To apply, please upload your curriculum vitae, a cover letter describing your experience, and the names and contact information of two references. Questions about this position should be directed to hrlucas@vcu.edu .
