The University of Virginia Department of Public Health Sciences in the School of Medicine is seeking highly qualified applicants for a one-year Postdoctoral Research Associate position, with the possibility of extension to three years based on an annual basis dependent upon satisfactory performance and the availability of funding.

The postdoctoral associate will engage in mentored research in population data-driven health services and policy research aimed at improving access to, outcomes of, and equity in cancer care delivery and outcomes. This position will be supported by a rich collection of population claims ( Virginia All Payor Claims), EHR data, and strong data and research infrastructure provided by the Department of Public Health Sciences, Population Health & Cancer Outcomes Core and Biostatistics Shared Resources .

The postdoctoral associate will be supervised and mentored by Dr. Xin Hu , an assistant professor in Health Economics and Health Services Research. The postdoctoral associate will meet and collaborate with internal and external investigators with complementary expertise such as in medicine, health informatics, and implementation science. The candidate can also receive training in research designs, statistical methods of comparative effectiveness analysis, policy evaluation, and longitudinal modeling, and grant writing.

Examples of ongoing projects include:
  • Palliative care and pain management utilization in patients with cancer
  • Health policy evaluation including the Affordable Care Act, pain-related policies, and Medicare payment reforms in patients with cancer
  • Organizational structures and cancer care delivery
  • Racial disparities in cancer care delivery and outcomes
The successful candidate will be expected to:
  • Support the implementation of current studies, which may include research activities related to obtaining, modifying, and continuing institutional review board approval (IRB), supporting data transfer and management, and communicating with local partners.
  • Cleaning and analyzing data collected through the implementation of the previous clinical trial studies and existing secondary databases.
  • Run advanced quantitative analyses using software such as SAS, Stata, R, etc.
  • Generate research questions for analysis and future grant applications.
  • Participate in the development of publications as lead and co-authors for peer-reviewed journals and grant proposals to funding agencies (e.g., National Institutes of Health, American Cancer Society).
  • Communicate research findings at key conferences (e.g., Academyhealth, American Society of Clinical Oncology, American Society of Health Economists, etc.).
  • Providing near-peer-mentorship to students and other early-career-scholars on the research team.
Minimum Requirements:

An earned Ph.D. in a research-oriented field, such as Public Health, Health Economics, (Bio)Statistics, or a related field is required by the start date of the position.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working with large datasets and cutting-edge statistical methods using administrative, clinical, and survey data.
  • Content expertise in some of the following areas: health policy and insurance, cancer care delivery, racial disparities.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • The ability to work well as part of a collaborative team and also work towards independent research
This is a 12-month appointment with the possibility of renewal contingent upon satisfactory performance and the availability of funding. Salary is commensurate with education and experience.
