General Summary/Overview Statement

The full-time post-doctoral Research Fellow position is supported by research grants funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH). The successful candidate will conduct research within the field of biomedical informatics using longitudinal electronic health records. They will participate in designing, developing, and evaluating innovative methods to conduct data mining and analytics, using comprehensive clinical knowledge bases and advanced natural language processing and machine learning techniques, to improve clinical decision making, patient safety and quality of care.

The study will be conducted at Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH), Harvard Medical School (HMS) and Mass General Brigham (MGB). This study provides an excellent opportunity for the Research Fellow to work within a multidisciplinary research team to explore advanced areas in health information technology. The Research Fellow will both contribute to ongoing research projects, and propose research projects that will be suitable for external funding.

The exact roles and responsibilities will vary by project and may include the following:

  • Participate in the design, development, implementation and evaluation of the proposed system and methods.
  • Lead/participate in the design and development of novel informatics methods and applications.
  • Participate in data analysis and system evaluation.
  • Lead/participate in manuscript preparation and writing.


Working Conditions

Professional office setting, mostly at MGB Assembly Row with occasional travel to BWH.

Qualifications

  • PhD degree in biomedical informatics, computer science, information science, computational linguistics, statistics, data mining, or a closely related field; or an MD/PharmD with demonstrated strength in Biomedical Informatics research.
  • Experience in biomedical informatics research; ability to plan and carry out research experiments and projects.
  • Candidates with experience in the areas of medical terminologies/ontologies, natural language processing/ computational linguistics, and machine learning are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Programming experience in computer programming languages (e.g., Python, Java, C#, etc).
  • Familiar with machine learning and statistical informatics methods.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills required.
  • Highly motivated, ability to identify potential problems and develop solutions.
