Minimum Qualifications

Education and/or Experience:
  • Graduation with a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in engineering, plus seven (7) years of experience related to engineering.



Licenses and Certifications Required:
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in the State of Texas; or if currently licensed in another state, the ability to obtain a Texas PE license within one (1) year of employment.

Power System Principal Engineer
Education and/or Experience:
  • Graduation with a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Engineering, or in a field related to the job, eight (8) years of experience in engineering, acquired either before and/or after licensing as a professional engineer.

Licenses or Certifications:
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in the State of Texas; or if currently licensed in another state, the ability to obtain a Texas PE license within one (1) year of employment.

The Principal Engineer / Power System Engineer Sr. will support the Distribution Reliability work group by providing technical support for Austin Energy's (AE) overhead and underground distribution system, network, and associated advanced grid program projects.

This individual will be expected to perform these tasks with limited assistance from peers, product documentation, and support resources for various projects.

SALARY RANGES :
Power System Engineer Senior: $47.75 - $62.07
Power System Principal Engineer: $51.07 - $67.04

Work Schedule:
  • This position is categorized as Essential Personnel with the City of Austin. Essential staff are required to work during emergencies or bad weather if they are scheduled to work and, in some cases, when they are not scheduled. Essential employees ensure the continuance of key operations for the City of Austin.
  • Work hours may include after hours, holidays, and weekends.
  • Shifts may change according to departmental needs.
  • Employee may be required to work additional hours outside of regular work schedule.

Fair Labor Standards Act:

This position is considered FLSA Exempt. Exempt employees are salaried and, except as provided, are not eligible for overtime compensation.

Preferred Qualifications
Preferred Experience:
  • Experience performing power system studies such as protective coordination, fault studies, load flows, service reliability, power quality, voltage stability.
  • Experience with data and technology tools such as Maximo, PowerBI, Milsoft Engineering Analysis, CYME , GIS (Geographic Information System), ADMS or OMS software.
  • Experience reviewing or interpreting circuit maps, electrical drawings, control diagrams and charts for electrical facilities.
  • Utilizes outage data, reliability metrics and circuit loading to develop system reliability work plans.
  • Provide technical support to resolve customer distribution issues.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to handle multiple daily interactions across internal and external customers.
  • Experience implementing utility projects from design to field installation.
  • Experience with tracking incidents, investigations, audits, and their associated action items.
  • Experience coordinating work with vendors and internally across several work groups.
  • Experience working with large data sets and data visualization tools.
