HDR is looking for a Bridges and Structures Business Class (BSBC) Northeast Principal Bridge Engineer (NE PBE), to be part of our national team of Principal Bridge Engineers who serve as technical resources to the BSBC. The primary duties of a NE PBE include serving in a lead technical role and providing technical advice, leadership, and direction as necessary to teams of bridge designers producing technical solutions. Specific tasks may include producing, or providing technical direction to teams tasked with producing, design guidelines, design policies, design examples, design criteria, design plans, design calculations, and specifications. You will perform structural planning, analysis, and design for various structural aspects of bridge projects ranging from simple to complex. Typical projects include steel plate and box girder, prestressed and post-tensioned concrete girder, truss, arch, and cable-supported bridges, as well as other common types of ancillary transportation structures such as retaining walls. You will often serve as a technical specialist or technical advisor on projects and may supervise or mentor more junior engineers in the performance of engineering tasks.

You will be involved with technical oversight and coordination of several projects concurrently. The candidate should be a team player ready to mentor bridge staff and to help grow the technical capabilities of the overall BSBC. The candidate should be well versed in both local and national bridge codes, standards, and specifications as well as actively involved in industry organizations to build the technical knowledge base of the group.

Primary Responsibilities

A NE PBE is responsible for providing technical leadership for the BSBC; the ideal candidate will be considered a regional and national technical resource. In addition, a NE PBE is also expected to collaborate with HDR area and regional leadership to identify the needs of the BSBC and implement its objectives.

The primary focus of a NE PBE is driving technical excellence in HDR's bridge program globally as well as within select key projects, by:

• Serving in a lead technical role for the BSBC overall, providing technical leadership and direction to bridge designers producing technical solutions throughout HDR.

• Supporting the BSBC Director, other Principal Bridge Engineers, and Major Bridge Leads.

• Participating in monthly coordination calls with the BSBC Leadership, other Principal Bridge Engineers, and Major Bridges Leads.

• Being the primary point of contact for interpretation of industry specifications, codes, and answering technical questions.

• Disseminating industry information through the preparation and delivery of Technical Bulletins, articles, presentations, and workshops.

• Actively supporting and participating in HDR Technology Center

• Assisting in the development of Standards and Practices, design tools, libraries, and so forth within the BSBC.

• Developing and implementing QA/QC procedures and completing reviews of bridge plans.

• Participating in project approach and resource (PARR) reviews.

• Supporting the identification, mentoring, and growth of technically focused staff within the BSBC.

• Serving in key technical advisor or lead roles on specific projects, providing technical leadership to individual projects as appropriate.

• Identifying and supporting pursuit and delivery of critical projects in conjunction with the Business Class and Area/Regional Transportation Business Group Leadership.

• Boosting the HDR brand by representing the company in industry technical committees, conferences, publications, and client meetings, showcasing the company's expertise in bridge design.

• Encouraging active participation of HDR BSBC staff in nationally recognized committees, conferences, and publications.

• Actively engaging in industry advancement and research.

• Developing and maintaining relationships with universities and other organizations to provide opportunities to partner for research.

HDR is a community built on our employee's relationships and the PBE should actively engage to build and foster personal relationships with the staff. As part of this, they will remain in communications with the Business Class Director and Area/Regional Leadership and be the technical link between the local offices and the larger global program effectively becoming a trusted advisor for each office bridge group. Although not required to answer every technical question themselves, they will strive to be able to point you in the right direction for resolution help, in other words, the PBE will have intimate awareness of HDR Bridge resources and maintain an expansive network within the Business Class and throughout the Transportation Business Group leadership.

Preferred Qualifications

• MS in Civil Engineering.

• Professional Engineering (PE) License.

• Member of nationally recognized committees (e.g., TRB, NSBA, ASBI, PCI, AREMA, etc.) in good standing.

• Minimum 20 years of design and analysis experience for bridges.

• Nationally recognized leader in bridge design.

• Comprehensive understanding of finite element modeling for bridges (e.g., LARSA or CSI Bridge)

• Published peer-reviewed papers and presentations in national industry publications and conferences, through organizations such as AREMA, TRB, NSBA, PCI, ASBI, etc.

• Industry recognized expertise and active, sustained participation on national technical committees.

• Experience leading teams for complex project delivery, using innovative delivery methods.

• Ability to adapt and integrate new technologies into the workplace.

• Familiarity with engineering software packages such as: LEAP Bridge Enterprise, FB-MultiPier, LPile, AASHTOWare BrR, midas Civil, MDX, SAP2000, CSiBridge, ADINA, RM Bridge, spColumn, LUSAS, STLBridgeLRFD, or STLBridge

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree
  • A minimum of 10 years bridge design experience
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Proven hands-on experience in all aspects of bridge design projects
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office software, GEOPAK, AutoCAD and MicroStation
  • Experience using structural analysis programs and bridge design software
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, communication skills and ability to work with various teams
  • Project management skills desirable
  • Strong communication skills and willing to work in a team environment
  • Must be comfortable being viewed as a technical expert in engineering analysis and design and have proven background of technical leadership on these types of projects
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must
