Principal Data Engineer

*Please note: This role is not eligible for 100% remote work. Employees must live within a commutable distance of the St. Louis Market and must be willing to be onsite at the client and/or Slalom office when needed.

You know data and you know how businesses are using data to make an impact in the world. You are a smart, collaborative person who takes ownership and gets things done. You are intellectually curious in business process as well as technology tools, platforms and languages. You plan, but you are a master of adaptation and improvisation. You are highly fungible and willing to wear multiple hats. You are a fast learner who can connect seemingly disparate ideas and help others create those same connections. You understand the best parts of tools and methodologies and can use them to create masterpieces of innovation. You are comfortable solving highly critical problems for some of most recognized organizations in the world. You bring your passion to work.

You come from a background in data with experience in architecture, data modeling, data engineering, or data governance using all different types of databases. You are comfortable explaining technical problems to leadership, business, and other technologist. 5-8+ years of experience working on and leading technical teams while delivering outcomes. You are comfortable with agile methodologies and enterprise development frameworks with deep experience in applying it in a real-world, team setting.

What technologies will you be using?

Everything, depending on clients' needs. Python, SQL, AWS, GCP, Golang, Hadoop, Snowflake, RDBMS, Kakfa, BI reporting tools, and Data Science toolkits. Projects may also require understanding of how to move from a legacy system (SQL Server, relational databases, etc) into a more modern architecture. No one needs to be an expert in everything on day 1 but we are always learning new things to solve problems, like:
  • Big Data Platforms (Apache Spark, Presto, Amazon EMR)
  • Cloud Data Warehouses (Amazon Redshift, Snowflake, Google BigQuery)
  • Object Oriented Coding (Java, Python)
  • NoSQL Databases (DynamoDB, Cosmos DB, MongoDB)
  • Container Management Systems (Kubernetes, Amazon ECS)
  • Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning (Amazon Sagemaker, Azure ML Studio)
  • Streaming Data Ingestion and Analytics (Amazon Kinesis, Apache Kafka)
  • Visual Analytics (Tableau, PowerBI)
  • Modern Data Workflows (Apache Airflow, dbt, Dagster)
