Position Summary
The Department of Emergency Medicine is seeking a highly motivated and qualified individual for a research position focused on research addressing the opioid epidemic and priority areas for enhancing the systems of drug abuse prevention, treatment, and harm reduction in New York State. Specific projects include: Documenting the use of and assessing the effectiveness of fentanyl and xylazine test strips; Evaluating the effectiveness of telemedicine for providing medication-assisted therapy; Understanding the perspectives of individuals in opiate treatment and recovery peer support roles.

Faculty are affiliated with the MATTERS Network, which conducts harm reduction activities, telemedicine, and referrals. MATTERS is currently one of the largest distributors of fentanyl and xylazine test strips. There will be a focus on activities supporting the submission of grant applications and manuscripts to peer-reviewed journals, e.g., literature reviews, with opportunities for co-authorship. Training and mentorship will be provided by research faculty in Emergency Medicine and the Clinical and Research Institute on Addictions ( CRIA ). This position is funded by a grant from the New York State Office of Addiction Services and Supports ( OASAS ).

Duties and responsibilities:
  • Assist interdisciplinary teams to ensure the successful execution of research objectives.
  • Contribute to the development and writing of grant proposals for extramural and/or intramural funding.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of research plans.
  • Summarize relevant literature and contribute innovative ideas to enhance the quality and impact of grant submissions.
  • Conduct focus groups facilitating research goals and analyze discussion content.
  • Assist in the presentation of research plans and results to faculty, collaborators/partners, and institutional/community stakeholders.
  • Assist in the dissemination of research findings through publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at conferences.
  • Assist team members to create reports, articles, and other documents for diverse audiences.
  • Participate in Department of Emergency Medicine research division projects and meetings.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in Public Health, Psychology, or a related field.
  • Experience in Psychology or Public Health research methods and manuscript production.
  • Proficiency in English with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a research setting.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with substance use research and/or harm reduction activities.
  • Experience in qualitative research methods and manuscript production.
  • Proficiency in qualitative data analysis software (e.g., NVivo, ATLAS .ti)
  • Track record of successful journal publications and grant writing.

Physical Demands
Salary Range $55,000 - $60,000
Additional Salary Information The salary range reflects our good faith and reasonable estimate of the possible compensation at the time of posting, the role and associated responsibilities, and the experience, education, and training of the selected candidate.
