Azure is the world's computer, hosting critical workloads and the latest Large Language Modellen (LLM) models. The Azure Core team builds the operating system that powers Azure, focusing on software and Machine Learning to maximize the efficiency and reliability of our servers, Graphics Processing Units ( GPUs), and datacenters. Our work, closely aligned with the Azure systems research group, has saved Microsoft billions and advanced sustainability goals. We're leading the charge in Microsoft's GPU/LLM initiatives, developing key components for Artificial Intelligence ( AI) training supercomputers.

As a Principal Software Architect, you'll drive the future of Microsoft's software-defined datacenter, reporting directly to a leader. This multi-year mission involves leveraging software, ML, and cross-layer optimization to build an industry-leading, end-to-end infrastructure stack. You'll tackle exciting challenges like systems to enable supercomputer training, dynamically composable servers, and software-optimized cooling systems, while serving as a technical leader, collaborating across teams, recruiting top talent, and writing impactful code.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as an architect for our Software-defined datacenter vision.
  • Be curious, and learn about how our end-to-end (E2E) stack across hardware/Datacenters/Software.
  • Design reliable and perform systems, and write good quality code.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • 4+ years of cloud infrastructure development experience.
Other Requirements:
  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
    • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 10+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • Experience
    • in analyzing and troubleshooting large-scale distributed systems;
    • AND in critical production online service environments;
    • AND developing, debugging, and maintaining code in C#.
Software Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $137,600 - $267,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $180,400 - $294,000 per year.
